  5. Hi everyone, as 2017 comes to an end, I thought that it would be nice to take some time to look back on the events that occurred in 2017. For starters, Blue Devils won their 18th title in 2017 and celebrated their 60th anniversary. Also in 2017, the Santa Clara Vanguard finished in 2nd and also celebrated their 50th anniversary as well. It was the first time Santa Clara Vanguard medaled since 2004. Also in 2017, the Cavaliers, the Boston Crusaders, the Madison Scouts, and the Mandarins made incredible jumps in 2017. The Cavaliers managed to slide into 4th place at DCI finals ahead of the Bluecoats, the Boston Crusaders finished in 6th place and beat the Cadets for the first time since 1980, the Madison Scouts made it back into the finals and finished in 12th place, and the Mandarins had their best season ever and finished in 13th place, their highest placement ever. They also finished the season with a 85.550, their highest score ever. Lastly, to conclude this list, we have Genesis and Music City. Genesis finished their very first competitive season in world class in 2017. They finished in 23th place and scored a 76.213, their highest score ever. And finally, the biggest headline for 2017 is Music City’s move to world class. Music City finished in 4th place in open class finals and finished in 24th place in world championship semi finals. In open class finals, Music City scored their highest score ever and scored a 76.763. In the world class semi finals, Music City scored a 74.275, their highest finish at DCI world class championships. Overall, 2017 was a great year and hopefully, we will have many great new story lines next year in 2018!

  7. After seeing the Blue Stars and Crossmen compete neck and neck with eachother all season this year, I began to wonder which corps might be in that same situation next season where they are right next to each other in terms of scoring and placement. My tight grouping predictions for next season are the following: Blue Devils v.s. Santa Clara Vanguard Santa Clara Vanguard v.s. Carolina Crown Bluecoats v.s. Cavailers Cadets v.s. Blue Knights Phantom Regiment v.s. Blue Knights Blue Stars v.s. Crossmen Madison Scouts v.s. Mandarins Troopers v.s. Colts Blue Devils B v.s. Vanguard Cadets Gold v.s. Golden Empire Seattle Cascades v.s. Jersey Surf Jersey Surf v.s. Pioneer Music City v.s. Genesis Battalion v.s. Columbians Impulse v.s. Shadow Shadow v.s. River City Rhythm Les Stentors v.s. Impulse Pacific Crest v.s. Oregon Crusaders Colts v.s. Academy Oregon Crusaders v.s. Spirit of Atlanta Again, these are just my predictions. What are your predictions? Do any of your predictions match any of mine? Do you agree or disagree with my predictions? Please comment in this thread and we will find out!
  8. After noticing that Music City finished 24th at the DCI World Championships and that Genesis finished 23rd right above them, I began to wonder who might score higher because they are right next to each other from a scoring standpoint. Attached is a poll and please vote for the corps that you think will score and place higher than the other.
  9. "March On!" starts in less than a half-hour in Minnesota, with this line-up (times are Central): 7:10 p.m. Colt Cadets 7:26 p.m. River City Rhythm 7:42 p.m. Genesis 7:58 p.m. intermission 8:18 p.m. Vanguard Cadets 8:34 p.m. Blue Devils B 8:50 p.m. Govenaires (all age) 9:06 p.m. Minnesota Brass (all age) There is a slight chance of thunderstorms, but I don't see anything too close on the NWS radar. If you're there, please post here!
  10. This may be a short thread. As of a few minutes ago, I'm getting reports from the area it's raining pretty bad. We'll see and hope for the best. World Class Phantom Regiment - 9:02 Madison Scouts - 8:45 Mandarins - 8:28 INT - 7:58 Pacific Crest - 7:41 Open Class Genesis - 7:24 Shadow - 7:07 I assume all times are local -- CDT. [i wish fromthepressbox.com would make it a little easier to cut and paste from their site.]
  11. Surprised not to see a thread yet for this show: DCI Dallas, presented by North Texas Festival of Drums Monday, July 20, 2015 -- 7:00 p.m. CDT Wildcat Ram Stadium Lake Highland High School 9449 Church Road Dallas, Texas 75238 Corps in performance order: Open Class Guardians Genesis World Class Mandarins Troopers Colts Crossmen Blue Stars Blue Knights Santa Clara Vanguard Blue Devils Source: DCI. If anyone has details on exact performance times or judges, by all means chime in. Most recent scores have BD at 87.300, SCV at 84.825, and BK at 81.900. It's pretty unlikely any of them will change positions, but what will their scores be? Will Stars catch Xmen? Will Colts catch Troop? How will Guardians do in their final performance this year? Inspiration for subject line:

  13. The DCI website is oddly limited in its information about this show. There is no zip code listed in the address. And no actual address, for that matter, just the name of the street. A little scouting with Google maps provides that data, but I'd also note that DCI's page for this show says still today, the day of the show, that "Ticket information about this event will be available soon." Anyway: A Blast in the Burg Memorial Field 284 W. Center Street Johnsonburg, PA 15845 Thursday, July 24 -- 7:00 p.m. Performance order: --Coastal Surge --Genesis --Stentors --Raiders --Legends --7th Regiment --Spartans This is the first meeting of current score leaders 7th Regiment and Spartans with an Open Class corps likely to be of similar caliber (Genesis--not sure why they go on so early), so we will see just how realistic their scores this season have been (particularly the Manchester scores). This is also the seasonal debut of Coastal Surge.
  14. Because most of these tiny shows get overlooked, and because I enjoyed it quite a lot, here is my review of Sunday's show! (Disclaimer: this review will likely be deficient in color guard and drumline commentary. I'd rather spare you "Wow, drumline's big" and "flags were nice but it was windy" because I admittedly don't have much expertise in these areas.) Legends: This was my first ever experience with Legends. I found the hornline to have a warm and nice sound, generally, however, the visual element definitely hurt the musical delivery. Granted it's early July, so there's still plenty of time to get the feet out of the sound. I really appreciated that the (unamplified) pit had timpani. I enjoyed the concept of the show, though at times integration of horns and drums muddied things a bit. Genesis: First viewing of this corps as well. Visually, a noticeable step up from Legends; this group marches well. The hornline sounds good, now if they would only turn down the awful synthesized bass in the pit. With 12 tubas, there's no need for electronic rumblings in the background; the one brass hit without synth was great. Shoutout to the mellophone section, who stuck out in a solid and good way. When the execution is up to the level of show design, it will be quite excellent. Colt Cadets: Again, first time I've seen CC. The level of demand doesn't seem as high as the previous 2 groups but it seems appropriate for the younger/smaller Colt Cadets corps. I thought the adaptation and performance of Eric Whitacre's "Equus" for the DCI field was well done, as it's an especially rhythmically challenging piece. The hornline, though small, held its own. Pioneer: I've only ever seen Pioneer once or twice, but always found them enjoyable. Musically, the material was traditional in a way (Pioneer's traditional style/traditional hymn tunes and Irish tunes) but also non-traditional in some of the settings of the music. I liked the brass book, I think the arrangements work. I do wonder if there is more to be done with the props in the show, the move around but don't seem to add much to the overall effect. Visual clarity (some especially notable lines and diagonals) looks like, well, July. The corps performs the show enthusiastically, for sure. Though the hornline is small for world class, they play reasonably well and I'd still rather hear it without synth bass beneath. Jersey Surf: I'm unsure about the midi sounds coming from the pit; I don't mind the added effect of woodwind and organ sounds too much, but I think they'd fit in much more musically if the samples had some decay instead of just releasing keyboard-style. I loved the effect of the plumes gradually appearing on the members through the opener. Surf's hornline is growing up and they have an understatedly wonderful show to work with. The tuba soloist in the Copland and mello soloist in the ballad both played very well. Also loved the return to the navy blue uniforms, it's fitting for this program. I can't wait to see this show in August, as Surf has more time on tour this summer than they've ever had. Colts: I'd been hesitantly looking forward to this show for quite some time since I love Pink Floyd. The corps really delivers. Hearing a hornline of this size and quality play parts of Dark Side of the Moon was really incredible. I don't have much commentary on the narration. I think it was delivered well and I understand that is evolving, though I don't know if parts of it would have been as effective if I had not know it as lyrics from Dark Side of the Moon. Radiohead's Everything in Its Right Place translates to the drum corps idiom incredibly effectively, I wanted to hear more of it. I'd seen a lot of complaints about the vocals in The Great Gig in the Sky, but I didn't find it to be disagreeable mostly on account of knowing the source material. Top split trumpets, and the trumpet section in general, were impressive (I'd noticed that last time I saw Colts live back in '12, too). I'm looking forward to see what happens to this show throughout the season.
  15. I don't see a thread for this show, which should be about half over now. Schedule as per From the Pressbox (CDT): 7:15 Legends 7:32 Colt Cadets 7:49 Genesis 8:26 Colts 8:43 Troopers 9:00 Phantom Regiment 9:17 Cavaliers It looks like a little rain is about to roll through, although I don't think it will last. If you're there, or after you're there, chime in here!
  16. There are actually two shows in Illinois tonight. About 75 minutes west of Lisle, six corps compete in Dixon, where it looks likely the Colts will take first place. 17. Genesis DBC is pleased to announce that they have partnered with TAMA Percussion! "We are very much looking forward to this opportunity.", says Executive Director Chris Magonigal. "When we realized that this could become reality through the fundraising efforts of our program we all could not wait for this weekend to get here. Having seen the drums and talking with Tom Float each year at TMEA, I knew that these instruments were exactly what our percussion program were looking for. Being the first to use these instruments in the ranks of DCI is going to be an exciting adventure." Check out all the news from Genesis at www.genesisdbc.org
  18. In an exciting turn of events, Genesis DBC announces a new production plan for 2014. Our new production, titled "Art of Darkness", will explore the descent from the light of Reality to the dark images of Madness. "The creative team and I felt that this years group had a maturity about them that was ready for a production of this caliber. For now we will hold off on the original concept for future use and we are all very excited about this new direction." Art of Darkness will feature a revisitation of the corps 2012 source material composed by Two Steps From Hell and will also include Lux Aeterna (from Requiem for a Dream) and Mad World (from Donnie Darko) you can follow all the 2014 news on our Facebook www.genesisdbc.org
  19. Rodriguez, Jacob Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps, Baritone Section Leader Hello! My name is Jacob Rodriguez and I am a high school senior from San Antonio, Texas. I play trombone and baritone for the high school marching band and have been a marching member in the band all four years of high school. During the off season I participated in the indoor percussion ensemble as a cymbal player and helped the group in winning the TECA State Championship for the first time in the school's history. During the summer following my sophomore year, I was given the life-changing opportunity to become a marching member for Revolution Drum and Bugle Corps, which resided in San Antonio, Texas. In the marching band season following the summer, I was able to use the skills that I acquired from the staff at Revolution to, with the help of my co-section leader, direct our low brass section to win section of the year. After this, I was given the opportunity to march with Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps, where I marched my second year of Drum Corps. During this season, we were able to win 3rd Place and received The Most Improved award along with the director, Chris Magonigal, winning the Best Director in Open Class. I have been blessed with being able to have so many great experiences with music. I plan to continue on with music this coming summer and so, once again, I am challenged with the task of raising money to participate in the 2014 Drum Corps Season. Other than selling candy at school, there are limited opportunities to do this since I am not only deeply involved in school, but also dedicated to the concert and jazz bands. You can help me continue to learn and keep my dream alive by donating money on my personalized site or on the Genesis website. All support is greatly appreciated and will definitely not be forgotten. All of the funds I receive will go directly to my tour fees. If you have any questions about donating you can email me at jacobrodriguez175@gmail.com.
