TitanSop06
So looking at scores, at semis, Academy scored 84.50 and Spirit scored an 85.50. Now on finals night, Spirit drops down to 84.50. If they had scored any lower, would that have put Academy in 12th place, even though they did not make finals? Or does it keep scores only from finals? Finals scores are for finals night, semis scores are for semis night. So no, Academy would NOT have gone up to 12th had Spirit dropped another .10 on finals. Happy Holidays! drumcat
Spirit could have scored a 1.6, and gotten 12th. They could have been DQ'd and they're 12th. Friday sets 1-12, no exception.
ToferVis
lol...i was picturing how odd it would be for this to actually take place....in 12th place, the Academy (Academy stands up in the stands...JSU gets ######....) lol.

That would be the greatest moment in DCI history right there!

i heard from someone
2003 is another example of this: scores from semi-finals would have moved Pacific Crest and Colts under both Mandarins and Capital Regiment, but of course the final placements were: 16 - Colts 17 - Pacific Crest 18 - Mandarins 19 - Capital Regiment
84BDsop
It's not that unusual to see the scores drop on finals night. Those corps near the spot tend to play with teh necessary competitive control to score high enough to make it into finals....but if they DO squeak in, they can let it all hang out ON finals day....they can't go any lower in placement, after all. They sometimes may not perform as perfect as Friday night, so the score dips....but it's more fun for the audience to be on the receiving end! i heard from someone
it's also a numbers management thing...the judges are taught how to manage their scores to leave room for potentially higher scoring groups while also fairly rewarding acheivement. when there are less groups to judge, the bottom number can become lower and still have room at the top. not saying this is what happens, but it could be...a lot of the time we're talking differences in tenths of a point, but added up they may be what causes the scores to differ.
