Do scores really start at zero as a corps steps off ? In theory that is what is suppose to happen is'nt it ? As the show progress's they earn points, right ? This happens from the very first show till the very last show, right ? Don't all corps have a turn over of members and staff ? If this is true, how do we know which corps are already in which position ?

I was just wonderin' .

I hear corps get 5 points credit for writing their name correctly at the top of the score sheets.

Sorry, Bill. We're all getting a bit punchy on the forum today.

sure everybody starts at zero...except for any corps that was top 5 the previous year. i believe they receive a bye all the way to semis, where they start off with a 10 point margin over 6th

Very interesting questions Bill. In theory, I think it is supposed to be a build up system, but in practice, it appears to be a subtraction system...or at the very least, a build up system that says corps X was 5 tenths better than corps Y in a given caption...of course, these are just my observations.

Back in the days of tic I recall a drum line zeroing out

I do not know if I want to go there. ( I like the old ways ! I was on side 2 in 1981 when we had 7 tics on the m&m sheet for the whole show at finals. )

As a side note, All 7 were more than likly on me !!!!

the tick system actually originated in the ancient egyptian corps. the most notable being The Kadesh Kavaliers. The ticks were applied to the bodies of whoever got out of step during the pyramid building process. ironically, this would also be the beginnings of the term "Screamer"

Technically, the tick system was abandoned so that corps could be score based on achievement. I think that numbers management today is focused more on the difference between groups than their achievement on a score of 0-100. Take Semi-finals 2004, BD got a perfect score in brass, but that was a reflection of their superior brass performance to the Cavaliers rather than them being perfect.
