i have a grudge with the dcp forum staff

Recommended Posts

okay, maybe angry bitter rant is a bit much. and grudge is a bit much. but i am puzzled by managements attitudes in here.

i think that the dcp forums staffers are the most heavy handed and closed minded group of moderators of any internet forum i've ever been a regular reader or contributor on. and i just don't get it at all. i've never seen so many passionate "stay on topic" police congregated in one place before. and not just warning people, closing off active threads, i see it happen at least once a week, and i just don't at all get it. i mean, i know this is a drum corps forum, and this section of it is dedicated to discussing world class junior corps. okay, i get it, we all do. and threads are divided by topic, so you can make salient comments on particular issues in a way that is easy to follow. not a hard concept. but is staying on topic such a noble purpose that we have to be incredibly uptight at all times in the service of it?

to me, this forum is more than just a site limited to discussing certain specific issues pertaining to world class corps. its a collection of people who share a common interest in "our thing". now, admittedly, a lot of these people are cretins i'd have nothing to do with in real life. some even like microphones, if you can believe it (and i know you can) but i've been on other forums, and i have learned two things about them. one, i go to the forum because i'm interested in a topic, but stay because of the smart, observant, witty people i find there. and two, smart and interesting people tend to be that way on a variety of subjects. i don't mind if someone gets off topic, because they often say something interesting, just on another subject, as often happens in conversation. and as usually happens in conversation, someone will eventually either steer everyone back on topic if they have something more to say on the original subject, or it will sort of die out naturally. either way, no one needs to be rapped across the knuckles with a ruler or sent into quiet corner, just for meandering.

or do they? i mean, maybe i'm totally out of step with everyone else's thinking here. if nothing else, this forum attracts some opinionated people. even posting this is a violation of the rules (after all we're here to talk about world class corps, not opine on the nature of the forum itself). but i hope the staffers will show a bit of discretion and at least let this one stay open long enough to see if anyone else cares about this one. because in the end, this is more than a forum, its a community of like minded individuals (in some ways), and a community needs to maintain a certain level of open mindedness and willingness to listen down to stay healthy. imo.

Gee thanks for calling people on the board cretins. Is that a step above or below miscreants?

Responding to Mad Scotty,

drumcorpsplanet.com hosts a forum that will be reaching its 20,000 registered member this year. The forum is divided for the sake of catering to as many of our members as possible in a positive and respectful manner. In regards to threads and whatnot, its not about them going off topic that triggers a closure, but more of where the thread spins off to. Every forum on the internet has its share of trolls and flame baiters, and DCP is no exception. When these folks attack, others tend to respond, which in the end triggers a thread to turn not only off topic, but to a point that causes the experience of other members to diminish, hence a closure.

We're not here to govern what is talked about, but are more to just make sure members of DCP have a positive experience with what this site is about, Drum Corps. We do cater to other topics as well, which you can find in our general off-topic forums.

Any concerns or questions you may have in regards to forum policies or actions taken by the FST can be sent to any of us via PM and we will respond as quickly as we can with our insight on the situation.

I have been on here for a while, and have tried to be civil in all my posts. I think there have been many good threads closed which actually had good discussions going on. With that said, I understand why they end up closing most of them. Lately, DCP has become not a discussion forum, but rather a place for people to insult each other over what I would call idiotic reasons. I wish that instead of pushing everyone out of a good discussion, there could be a way to just close off the people who are usually the main problem most of the time..We all know who they are, yet I continue to see the same people bashing each other over and over without anything being done. How many warnings do these people get before being banned anyways? 20??

You are not the only one thinking this. I think what has bothered me is that it seems things have become a lot tighter in recent months, like threads are on a hair-trigger to be closed.

I have never understood why threads have to be closed because they wander off-topic. Sometimes the off-topic discussion is more interesting, funny, or entertaining than the original discussion. That's just the nature of informal discourse--I mean, how many people stay "on topic" when they're hanging out with friends? Has anyone ever ONCE had a long conversation that didn't at some point prompt someone to say, "Okay, really, what were we talking about?"?

My biggest disappointment with this site came when the rule was passed for electronics, and a mod/mods tried to mitigate (read: sweep under the rug, IMO) the discussion about it by putting it in a separate place. I had some real problems with some of the threads they moved over there. This was one of the biggest changes in the activity in a long time, so it pretty much WAS the discussion in drum corps at the time, but they pulled all of that out of the main forum (which is where it belonged), and also dumped ANYTHING controversial over there (anything about Cadets and hashmarks, mics and amps, woodwinds, etc.) and left us on the main forum with the six-zillionth iteration of "who thinks Phantom should have won in 89" and seventy-six threads about pictures of dead VK buses in the desert.

So no, it's not just you. It's a shame, I still come to this site because it is far and away the most active on the net, but things have become a bit silly here recently.

That's because this is the appropriate forum for this, as its about DCP customer service.

See, that's the other problem with this forum. No sense of humor. Maybe I should surround all of my posts like this with "lawlz!!!1one!!!1!" and smileys so people get it.

Kee-rist! Will this post get moved to the "complaining about other member's sense of humor" section of the forum, or will this thread get closed because I'm off-topic now?

Sorry, we don't have a "complaining about other member's sense of humor" forum.
