So, I emailed Directv today.

remember the finals pay per view-ish setup in the mid 90's? That was wild!

Maybe they'll do the in theater thing for finals...I wouldn't be against that. I'm sure it doesn't cost as much as b'casting. And since they're not spending money this year on b'cast, how about HD production and Blu-Ray dvd's?

that would be SWEET!

I would imagine that the reason they do quarterfinals in the theater as opposed to semis and finals is because theaters are looking for ways to get people there in the week (QF is on Thursday). On Friday and Saturday they are their busiest and don't need DCI.

If I weren't ba-roke, then yeah.

I'm still banking on PBS getting the rights again.

I'm sure they'll do something special with finals this year. We'll just have to wait and see.

It is my understanding that there can be no broadcast of Finals this year. ESPN owns the rights to that broadcast if one were to take place, so unless someone with big-time cash wants to pay the 250K plus to allow ESPN to air the broadcast, then it will not happen. As I understand it, DCI signed a 3-year deal with ESPN. DCI backed out after last year. Just too expensive vs. the ratings and time slot given. However, ESPN still owns the rights to any broadcast should one occur, but that is for Finals only. Therefore, DCI can do the CineCast, and then the WebCast on Friday.

Next year we shall see what happens. I highly doubt Pay-per-view would be an option. Too expensive to get the cable and dish companies to agree to terms and profit sharing, and then hope you get enough people watching without hurting the LIVE attendance of Finals.

Honestly, we have never had it so good. Never did I dream that we could go to a theater and watch DCI Quarters, and then see Semis the next night in our living rooms on a computer hooked up to the TV with stereo sound. That's pretty cool.

As for PBS next year, you never know, but PBS always likes to run their funding marathons during the event, so it lasts way too long and they don't get enough sponsorship through the DCI crowd and hence don't like showing Finals.

I would love to see it on a cable channel like A&E or Discovery HD Theater. That would be cool, but again, cost vs. ratings vs. logistics will determine the direction DCI takes.

If DCI went on DirectTV and became like NascarHOTPASS, I'd watch it constantly lol

Kudos to the OP for sending that email, with the disclaimer that he did not represent DCI. I have sent feeler emails and letters out over the years, periodically I get a positive response and submit it to the "powers that be", only to have them say "wow, we didn't know that". If you want something done take the bull by the horns, no harm in being proactive. To those that sit back and complain about things not going their way......keep sitting back.

Maybe if a few more people sent emails (or letters) DCI might jump on someone's radar over at DTV.

True, but the amount of money flowing into NASCAR dwarfs DCI's cash flow by a couple orders of magnitude. As for DirecTV, how are they supposed to broadcast in any form or fashion something they're not contracted to have anything to do with? The sentiment is nice but they're not going to have anything to do with whether or not DCI has any sort of PPV TV option.
