Top 10 Shows

Recommended Posts

I have not seen a thread like this, so I thought I'd make it.

List here the 10 shows that are, in your opinion, the top 10 DCI shows of all time.

This is not a thread to bash others for what they like, but to just see who likes what.

Here is my list:

1. Carolina Crown 2008 - Finis

2. Carolina Crown 2007 - Triple Crown

3. The Cadets 2000 - We Are The Future

4. Carolina Crown 2005 - Angelus

5. The Cadets 2005 - The Zone: Dreamscapes in 4 parts; with a door

6. Madison Scouts 1995 - A Drum Corps Fan's Dream

7. Phantom Regiment 1991 - Phantom Voices

8. The Cavaliers 2001 - Four Corners

8. The Cavaliers 2003 - Spin Cycle

8. The Cavaliers 2004 - 007

It's a three way tie for 8th because I can never decide which of those three I like better. Keep in mind that I am still trying to expand my knowledge of past Drum Corps shows as I just started watching Drum Corps in 2000. Other honorable mentions are listed below:

Star of Indiana 1990-1993

Santa Clara Vanguard 1989

All good choices. I think these are m top 10 favorite shows of all time:

10) Star '91

9) Cavies- '91

8) Madison- '97

7) Crown- '07

6) SCV '88

5) SCV- '04

3) BK '00

2) Madison '88

1) Star '93

Funny thing to go back and watch Star '93. At the time of that show I was a high school junior and I did not like it. But, something about it made me keep watching and watching and by the time I finished college I was hooked. To this day I cannot believe how revolutionary that show was. Look at all the body movement and the visuals. That kind of stuff was not done around DCI at the time and the music was so left field for the time. What is interesting is that although I do not call BK the next Star, I do see immense similarities to what BK is doing now and what Star had begun to establish in that '93 show in terms of body movement. I had not remembered that much dance in that show until I watched it again yesterday. Wow, I wish I could've see in live. I wish someone would play tribute to them and revisit that show, no names  - ahemmmm- BK  Anyway Madison '88 was what made me love drum corps and though I find Star '93 to be my favorite, Mad '88 is very close too.

1. 99 Santa Clara Vanguard - The attitude of the corps is insane! Most intense performance I've seen on video.

You should have seen it live. BD was cleaner, no doubt, but Vanguard had about 1,000 times more GE on Finals night. The crowd response was almost equal to what the hometown Scouts got for their Jesus Christ Superstar show. 1999 SCV remains to this day the best drum corps performance I've seen in person.

You know , I have not developed a top ten list before, and I found myself basing my selections on amount of replay, and how the show effected me emotionally. I am moved by most of these shows, for one reason or another. Some are just cool.

In no particulart order"

*87 Garfield - this was my 1st year watching drum corps; that company front blew me away

*88 BD - this show just oozes style, and I'm a sucker for "Since I fell for you"

*07 Crown - the way this show was received by fans enhances my enjoyment. I am so proud of how this corps has grown, and was delighted that those kids got to experience that kind of reception

*92 BD - I love the closer, it's cheesey, but it gets me every time

*03 BD - way cool ... a phenomenon, in fact

*03 Phantom - popular choice, but I have to say that my enjoyment of this one is also enhanced by the fan reception. And in watching the DVD, at the very end, the lone colorguard member standing breaks into sobs of joy as the camera zooms in. That impact on a person is what I love about this activity

*88 SCV - another one that moves an entire stadium

*92 SCV - the bottle dance gives me goose bumps every time.

*94 BD - i miss these Blue Devils

*08 Phantom - It's hard to put 08 shows in the proper context of my experience, just because it is so recent. But having witnessed their climb in Bloomington, I feel assured that Sparatacus will take its proper place in my all time Top 10.

So I noticed a couple of things. I have not been good at keeping up with years that I missed. Pre-87, for example, and there were some years that I did not pay much attention (1995-2002), and I am only vaguely familiar with those years. That's one reason why 95 Madison is not on the list.

And then, who's missing? The most glaringly absent corps is Cavaliers. I love the Cavaliers, and always enjoy their shows. I am, in fact, frequently in awe of their accomplishment. But I find that I just don't have the emotional connection to their shows that I have for others. Never really though about it prior to now, and it's certainly not a knock. But there it is.

And I also notice that I favor the big guys. I'm guilty. I don't really pay attention to Open class (even though I marched in a smaller corps). I do pay attention to full top 12, and enjoy plenty of shows outside the top 6, but not enough to call a favorite.

Lastly, I marched in 1992, so I have an affinity for those shows (Cadets and Madison get a lot of play from that year, too).

Honorable Mention

04 Phantom

91 Star

92 Cadets

08 Crown

96 Phantom

06 Phantom

88 Madison

87 SCV

92 Crown - what can I say?
