I was there when...........

Recommended Posts

I was there in Orlando on finals night in 1996, when I was too young, and too new, to appreciate what I just saw.

"AND IN THIRD PLACE....."

My biggest "I was there" :

was finals night, hearing the "undefeated" BLUE DEVILS called in third.....and we hadn't heard our corps score called yet...

Feels good huh Phantom?

side note: Our guard staff was at the truck pulling all our show flags off the poles and setting all the guard equipment on the truck. K.C. Michaels said that they were nearly done and he could hear the scores being announced, no big deal.... But K.C. told the guard staff.

"UM, you guys, they haven't called Madison yet, and they passed the Cadets and Cavies..."

The staff froze......you see, if we won we would need all our equipment for a VICTORY RUN real quick.

The staff started to put the flags and guard equipment back together as fast as they could...using the old tape they pulled off.... Each one of our show flags used a weight ontop to counter the flag weight.....the staff just shoved any weight into any poll...The equipment looked like 1st graders had assembled them...

When we did our victory run we were so full of adrenalin, we were yelling as the weights flew off our flag polls and the tape was half hanging on.... It was a MESS and we laughed all the way to the bank!!!

My $.02

I was there when the front line had to RUN back to the truck and unload EVERYTHING which had been put away for the trip back to Madison, screaming at the top of our lungs the whole time.

good times, folks!

BTW, I still am not ready to give my actual response to the original post...this one doesn't count!

I was sitting back sideline in the trees hanging out with some girls in Whitewater when all of a suddun you hear the crowd and look on the field, GARFIELD was on and there were a whole bunch of kids falling during the Z- pull. Oh my GOD, it was like dominos each one falling, kinda surreal.

In was in Stillwater in 1986 too, watching my corpsmates get sick as we warmed up. We lost about 35 folks (sick not dead)to food poisoning that night and had to do a standstill. The next the Minn. DHHS didn't want us to leave the state, but the Rockford show was that night. After some artful negotiation we were allowed to leave the state with a police escort to the Wi. border. We then high tailed to Ill. were we picked up another police escort to Rockford. Funny thing, being young I didn't call my parents when all of this happened, however it made the AP and they read about it in the paper that morning. They weren't planning on coming to the show but htey wanted to see if their son was still alive. I got chewed out pretty bad for not calling. :whip:

why'd you need a police escort?

When did this happen and how'd the corps handle it?
