TROOPERS MAKING THE FINALS!

Recommended Posts

This conversation makes me absolutely excited... and at the same time, extremely sad.

Excited because the corps I marched with has the potential to go for it this year.

Sad because of all the politics that could keep it from happening, even it they do have the talent.

That's all. Go Troop. HLD :)

They way it looks right now, eleven spots are spoken for. Troop will have to duke it out with Academy, Spirit and Madison for twelfth.

along with crossmen, colts, glassmen, and maybe more.

Well for starters--and I apologizing for being slightly less knowledgeable about forums than most, I don't really go on forums all that much except for my World of Warcraft forum--one person earlier in the thread said

"4. The judges have to like your corps' performance skill and show design enough to take any heat from the staffs of corps above you about your advancement. (This one is subtle and hard to prove, but one can argue that this can hold an upwardly mobile corps back a spot or two, especially if you're talking about dislodging a perennial top three, top six, or finalist corps.) Example from critique: Famous staff member: "You think X's drumline was better than our drumline?? How many times has THAT happened in the last ten years??" Rookie judge: "Tonight I did." Big name staff member: ")(*&)(*&)(*!!!!!" It's hard, and the higher you go, the harder it is to defend, as a judge."

That and the fact that, since Troopers have been placing lower than most corps, they usually go on first, or close to it. That makes it harder for them to push past others. That one is not necessarily as political as it is psychological, but whatever.

Let's not get crazy with political conspiracy theories. The only thing we can look at with Troop is their spread with BK. If they can stay close and/or close the gap, then they're going to be fine when they go on before Colts and Madison the night before Denver.

In general, I agree with the judges' scores. They're usually accurate and do reflect when a corps has an excellent performance. I stand by my original assessment that Troopers are going up in placement this summer, but I'm not going to hang my hopes on them making Finals. It's way too early, but from what I've seen Troopers are one of the few corps who have shows real improvement from last summer (along with Crown and Mandarins) and I expect that they will be receiving better OTL times next year because of it.

Any corps can skyrocket up the ranks at the big shows. I experienced it first-hand at POC in 93 and 94, and ANY of the corps in the battle for Finals can do the same. I just hope it's Troop for selfish reasons, or at least everyone stays close all summer. To have corps trading victories makes the kids work harder and makes the summer more fun for the fans.

I said they won't go quietly into the night and that there is an epic battle in store for 12th. I never said that they WILL make finals. I certainly WANT them to make finals, but for someone to say they WON'T make finals 1 week into the season is just wrong. Troop has assembled a stellar staff and the average age of the Corps has gone up each of the last 3 seasons. They have as good a shot as any of the Corps from 10 to 15 of making the top 12 and it could be argued that their show is potentially better than any of those from 10 to 15.

Don't take me the wrong way. I too want The Troop to make finals as well. I just think some people are getting a bit too defensive towards people that don't like them or don't think they can do it.

Do you mean that there might actually be someone out there who doesn't like the Troopers!? Tell me who, and I will hunt them down and shove one of my knitting needles in their eye.

I think the political argument might be overstated; however, when the Troopers rebounded a couple years ago they had a lot of things to work on and fight for, including becoming financially stable, assembling a team of instructors and actually putting kids on the field.

Well, we all know that they have thus far been exceedingly successful at the aforementioned. However, there is another thing they have to fight and that is the stigma that came from years of fielding a not-so-good corps (speaking the truth in love). It simply takes time to shed that cloak of negative perception. However, I think along with the other aspects that they have been successful in, they are also succeeding in this!
