your own corps

Recommended Posts

Okay, with the recent events in open class and opinions surrounding OC and Revo, how bout we all take a swing at starting our own "mock" corps. Assume we already have instruments and a staff. Here we are in September planning for the season to start.

How many shows?

Buses/gas?

Tour fees?

Food budget?

Staff pay?

Emergency fund?

I honestly would like to see what the dcp community can come up with.

Mods feel free to shut down this thread if you think it is inappropriate.

Where is the corps located?

Is it a corps deeply rooted in the community, like the Academy?

Is it an arts foundation or just strictly a drum corps?

Is it in an area where bingo is still legal?

What is your financial investment?

These are some variables that make this almost impossible to answer black and white.

30 shows.

We have jets not busses.

We pay the marching members.

Costco follows us on tour.

Staff would be the only expense and our budget is around 2 mill.

And we are all in tip top shape, we don't need no stinkin' doctors.

Still working on a name though!!!!

Let's say that we were just handed the Railmen drum and bugle corps from Nebraska. Let's say our base is now in Lincoln, NE with some ties to UN Lincoln. Not extremely rooted locally but the Union pacific has high hopes for the corps. Bingo is legal, but the permit takes two years to get. More of a just fun corps more than a competitve but hope to ride in on fan emotion.

Elaborate on financial investment.

Sounds like the "Shangri-la Squires"

John - Very similar to what I was thinking but the tour fees seem a bit high if offering a one week tour. I like the idea of weekends only to start - doing lots of parades and appearances to raise awareness as well as cash.

$300/day for food + perishables. I thought the formula was around $10 per day per person. Is that out of whack?

Not really out of wack, I have shopped before and been able to do $300 for two days worth of food thanks to 10 lbs of beef being $15 at walmart

Wow - nice work! How many people on tour?

Using the $10 per person per day figure and even going with the smallest possible competing corps (30)you're looking at $300 per day just for the members. Add staff, drivers, volunteers and my $10 /day/person would get up to around $450 per day or $3150 for the one week tour in year two, or $115 of each member's dues.

Seems like I'm over-estimating (better than under-estimating when it comes to food, but still....)

EDIT - true confession time - I'd LOVE to start a corps here in Guelph, but my wife would be packing my bags for me, and I don't mean for tour.....
