So, I was looking through one of my many spreadsheets, and it suddenly hit me:

With a 97.50 this past season, Carolina Crown has now scored higher at DCI Finals than Star of Indiana or the Madison Scouts ever have in either corps' history. :worthy:

That was just stunning to me, so I decided to compile a list: what's the HIGHEST score each corps has ever received at a DCI Finals? The results are as follows (appropriately for DCI, there's a tie for 1st place)...

99.150 The Cadets 2005

99.150 The Cavaliers 2002

99.050 Blue Devils 2009

98.800 Santa Clara Vanguard 1989

98.400 Phantom Regiment 1989

97.500 Carolina Crown 2009

97.300 Star of Indiana 1993

97.100 Madison Scouts 1988

94.800 Suncoast Sound 1986

94.450 Bluecoats 2005

94.300 Glassmen 2001

94.100 Spirit 1986

93.000 Crossmen 1997

92.500 Blue Knights 1999

92.400 Boston Crusaders 2002

91.900 27th Lancers 1981

90.800 Bridgemen 1981

90.600 Velvet Knights 1988

90.425 Blue Stars 2008

88.800 Freelancers 1984

88.550 Anaheim Kingsmen 1974

87.000 Sky Ryders 1986

86.950 Muchachos 1974

86.700 Troopers 1985

86.300 Colts 1995

86.000 Oakland Crusaders 1975

85.700 The Magic 1997

85.300 Guardsmen 1979

85.300 Kilties 1975

84.050 Cascades 2002

83.300 North Star 1979

82.900 Argonne Rebels 1972

82.400 Royal Crusaders 1975

82.400 Seneca Optimists 1977

82.200 Dutch Boy 1990

81.250 Des Plaines Vanguard 1972

77.150 Purple Lancers 1974

75.750 Black Knights 1973

73.950 Bleu Raeders 1972

72.250 Commodores 1973

Another odd statistical anomaly: until this year, the Blue Devils' highest ever Finals score was in a season the DIDN'T win the title! (98.525 in 2004, still the highest runner-up score in DCI history).

Don't know what sort of conversation could arise from this; I just posted it for people to look at and go, "huh."

and we are in 11th...

And, the highest score phantom has achieved is ALSO a year in which they didn't win the title (1989).

Unfortunately using only finals scores gives a false reading on the bottom corps on this list, since they did MUCH better in prelims (or even other contests during the season) than their finals scores indicate. Many of the early DCI Championships were notorious for the prelims-to-finals score drops for the lower placing corps.

correct. kinda makes you wonder about the rest of the compiled 'facts', doesnt it?

Yeah, I was going off the top of my head and said something that wasn't correct. Don't be a #### to a stranger.

This is true, and I debated compiling a "highest score ever" list (and maybe will, some day). But, as they say, "you're only as good as your last show," and it's the Finals score that matters most.

Can you re-do this exercise and create 2 lists?

One list for the old scoring system (through 1983?) and one for the current system.

There are quite a few corps from back in the day that have results that look skewed too low on the combined list.

For example, the Anaheim Kingsman with an 88.45 in 1st place in 1972 really isn't a good comparison to the 2008 Blue Stars 90.425 in 8th place.

(NO disrespect to the Blue Stars - just a different era.)
