Bob984
Drum corps staff and instructors change frequently, and whenever a big name is announced it is always assumed that the corps will become much better due to the staff's track record. So is this actually true? (I assume in some ways it helps recruiting because kids are drawn to big name instructors). And more specifically: Has anyone here personally experienced a staff change in their years of drum corps that really made THAT much difference in your ability to perform, score well, and generally enjoy your time? New staff members can make a big difference. I was part of a team such as this, and the corps went from 17-10-7-3-1 in 5 seasons. Everyone involved, management, staff, support, and members, had the "ride of their life"......... The key to a great show are great arrangements, great visual design, and a staff that can get the members to buy into and execute the show. Sometimes, the "hype" on a particular person is not all that it is cracked up to be, or that person has only committed to limited time; in those cases, the impact is not going to be as large. If you look at the additions the Madison Scouts just made though, they are significant, because they have a staff in place that is legendary in terms of ability; the possibility that the Scouts will improve leaps and bounds, and in a hurry, are significant, which will be great for the corps. In regards to "THAT" much difference; the difference is two fold....the members will have a much stronger product to perform, and they will be inspired to reach for their highest performance levels. In comparison, if there was no change in staff, it can be a futility exercise to bust your tail on a show that isn't working; kind of like a good race car driver with a slow car.......... gbass598
I think the new staff effect will be seen in full by Tom Aungst and Neil Larrivee running the show at Blue Stars percussion and all of the Madison staff changes. They should make a noticeable difference in 2010.
contrajedi8
For a case study in how a consistent, great staff has a positive effect on performance and competitive success, see the Concord Blue Devils.
thatguywiththehat
Also i'd like to point out that some staff changes aren't for the better and that it might not work out. Colts in 2006 had a killer percussion staff head up by Nick Angelis and the Colts percussion wasn't that stellar. IMHO the only reason they didn't make finals in 2006. It didn't help that he left or was asked to leave midway through either.
