The history of the Westshoremen

Recommended Posts

Brenda and I are having lunch tomorrow with John Arietano's wife Nancy.

Haven't seen her for a while... it will be nice to catch up a bit!!!

She and I marched in the Manville Crusaders, in the French horn line, 1971-73.  1971 is when Screech started writing the music for our corps.

It was so good to see Nancy Arietano Friday.  We basically picked up where we had left off.  LOL.

Shared some great memories of John and his time with the Westshoremen.

Interesting stuff here. Found out I've been in possession of the second oldest known existing Conn Tuba, just started a ground up restoration at Rosso. Tentative finish, Tubachristmas 2018.

Some recent reading, I discovered the Cimbasso. Mike's prolly like... yeah... found this description of it off The Horn Guys website.

"They can produce a light sound that is less overpowering than the tuba, or they can produce a monstrous sound that is offensive to many. " (boldface mine)

I read the end of that sentence and thought... MUST HAVE..... :innocent:

The Resto project's really got me stoked. Fair amount of money bit by bit to get it back., etc. But when a new E Flat runs 7500 bucks it's actually relatively cheap....

Valves are headed to Anderson, who specializes in plating instruments and aerospace applications... Actually looking at a  Stölzel valve was pretty cool. They're in pretty good shape but by today's standards rather fragile and thin walled prolly because the valve exhausts through the BOTTOM of the valve when deflected.

Heh... a guy I marched with in Sun in 1981, every time he'd take the train past Franklin Field, he'd give the place a one-finger salute. LOL.
