The Connecticut Hurricanes took Shelton High School by storm this past Sunday where they held their annual Open House. The spacious Shelton High School proved to be a perfect venue for this event. Well over 125 were in attendence, including lots of eager new faces for the first rehearsal of 2010.

The day started with introductions by Vice President of Operations, Bernie Malesky and President Kevin Hassan. Vice President of Programming, Jim Dugan then introduced the 2010 staff and unveiled information regarding our 2010 Program......which will be detailed in a seperate announcement coming soon.

The corps then broke into sectionals before lunch where Justin Mitnik (brass), Kevin Murphy (percussion), and Phillip Traini (colorguard) led their respective sections. After lunch, the one and only Joe Roche led the brass and percussion sections in a visual block detailing the foundations of our movement program. After breaking into sectionals after visual block, the brass (who were moving and playing already!), the percussion and colorguard continued to refine the technique programs to be implemented in 2010.

The sections joined together to perform what they learned during the delay to the delight of an audience of members, staff, and administration.. The Storm Warning flags are raised in CT, as the Hurricanes are picking up right where they left off in 2009 and anticipation is high now that 2010 has officially started

The Brass Section has rehearsal this Sunday at the Seymour Community Center from 10 AM - 5 PM. Directions are below:

I was in attendance for half the day on Sunday, but I can already tell you...If you thought the Hurcs were intimidating last year, you just WAIT until you see them this year! Unlike most winter beginnings, this year was not a "dust off the chops and learn to play again" start. The educational staff jumped right in and treated this as if it was Sunday morning of Labor Day weekend! And by the end of the day, you could tell this corps means business this year!

Justin Mitnik returning as brass caption head already had the hornline huffing and puffing and wanting more! This hornline already has a great sound, and definitely practiced over the break! The day ended with the production of a few excerpts from the brass technique book, as well as the corps song, and warm up Mariah. What a rich, deep sound the 50+ horns in attendance were able to put out in only December!

A full percussion in attendance began working the technique book put into place by returning caption head Kevin Murphy. All i can say is 25 snares and 11 tenors were present at the open house. Look out for this battery this summer. They'll definitely get your attention. The pit percussion also had about 15 people in attendance. I believe someone was overheard as to say "I can't believe the talent level in this front ensemble right now" The day ended for the battery showing off a few of their technique exercises, as well as the pit playing one of theirs. Overall, a very successful day for the Hurcs percussion who are looking to improve upon their 3rd place ranking from finals last year.

The guard, led by the brilliance of Philip Traini and Jim Zulik again this year, rehearsed all day as well. They definitely have not skipped a beat since September. They performed a short "winter guard"-esque routine for the corps at the end of the day. Can we say three-peat? They already demonstrate the talent, drive and motivation needed to compete in the DCA arena this summer for a third straight guard title!

Overall the corps had a very successful day and look forward to the 2010 season. The Jim's, Philip, Kevin, and Justin, along with the rest of the teaching staff are all very excited about this year! If you are on the fence about marching at all, you need to hop off and get to CT! You will not be disappointed. There are still spots available in all sections, so stop by and see whats cooking. The design and educational team have their act together this year to put out another quality program from the green team!

Best of luck to the Hurcs in 2010!!!

I think it's great to see two of DCA's charter members (Hurricanes and Buccaneers) in such terrific shape, more than 40 years after DCA's founding.

The Connecticut Hurricanes will be coming out in force this year for their run to DCA Finals. There will be more brass coming to audition and fresh faces in every section. Hard work will be paying off, and good luck goes out to all the other corps during their opening of the 2010 season.
