Favorite 10 Ballads

Recommended Posts

Since there's one for top ten endings, here's one for the top 10 ballads of the DCI era

I'll start this off

1.) SCV '00 (Adagio for Strings)

2.) BD '99 (Adios Nonino, it just got louder and louder)

3.) HNC '95 (Blowing off Steam from Far and Away)

4.) Phantom '06 (Ave Maria)

5.) SCV '07 (St. Gregory the Great from the Church Windows)

6.) Phantom '93 (Fire of Eternal Glory)

7.) Bluecoats '06 (My Heart and I)

8.) BD '97 (As Time Goes By)

9.) HNC '98 (Canterbury Chorale)

10.) Crown '09 (Somewhere over the Rainbow/ Somewhere)

In no particular order:

1. Phantom '06 - Ave Maria

2. Blue Devils '03 - Concierto de Aranjuez

3. SCV '00 - Adagio for Strings

4. Spirit '09 - Dust in the Wind

5. Crown '09 - Somewhere Over the Rainbow

6. Spirit '08 - Corynorhinus (from Batman Begins)

7. Bluecoats '08 - The Boxer

8. Phantom '93 - Fire of Eternal Glory

That's all I can think of. One piece that I've always wanted to hear is Debussy's "The Engulfed Cathedral." I know a few corps have done it already, but their interpretations of that piece have been, in my opinion, absolutely terrible. So I don't count those. I'm waiting for a corps to do it right!

Cadets 05. No other ballad even belongs in the same sentence as Dancer in the Dark. Just a truly glorious piece of music, and my all time favorite piece of music. Honorable mention to Bluecoats 2002 for introducing me to it.

Favorite ballad I ever got to perform was Glassmen 08, Enya's Watermark/Send In the Clowns. Just an absolute joy to perform.

Just a few that come to mind. In no particular order.

Suncoast 1984 - Probably one of the most moving pieces I've ever seen/heard on a football field.

Phantom 1993 - Fire of Eternal Glory. Very moving live.

Garfield 1984 - West Side Story. Barbara Maroney.

Cadets 2005 - Overture from Dancer in the Dark. Best part of the show IMHO.

Blue Devils 1989 - Soloist has a bad night at Finals. But this thing was amazing during the season.

Cadets 1993 - On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss. Cadets hornline turns the corner that year.

Phantom 1994 - Clarie de Lune. Gorgeous.

Cadets 1989 - Les Miserables. The corps is split into two groups and plays two ballads against each other.

Crown 2009 - Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Somewhere from West Side Story woven together. Great arrangement and beautifully played.

Star 1990 - Very short excerpt from Belshazzar's Feast.

Thanks for letting me play.
