Here it is...the long-awaited, heartily argued story on the Top-5 Most Legendary DCI Shows of all time. "What was the most legendary drum corps show ever to grace the football field? Did you jump out of your seat as you observed the most amazing drill move? Which performance held you captive as you listened to the most beautiful musical arrangement? Was there a show where you witnessed something that changed the activity in a way that still had you talking about it years later? Halftime Magazine asked drum corps directors, instructors and fans to give us their take on the most legendary shows in drum corps international history. Here are their collective picks and what made those shows so special." "Trying to determine the most legendary shows in drum corps is no small task. Sure, there are the “fan favorites”—such as Carolina Crown’s “Triple Crown” in 2007 or The Blue Devils’ “Big, Bad and Blue” that featured “When a Man Loves a Woman” in 1992—that captured the emotions and tugged at the hearts of fans around the world. You could even consider every championship show a legendary performance dating back to the Anaheim Kingsmen’s program capturing the very first medal in 1972. But even runners-up and other finalists may have had standout presentations but simply been ahead of their time. To help figure out which shows made a lasting impact on the activity, Halftime Magazine asked drum corps directors, instructors, members, alumni and fans to help us rank the top five most legendary Drum Corps International performances of all time..." Did your choices for most legendary drum corps shows make the list? -GM I find it quite curious that the 1976 Blue Devils show was left off both lists. It was groundbreaking in many ways: longest musical number to date (Channel One), new direction visually (all curvilinear drill), and the first corps in history to sweep all captions. Unlike the current iteration, the corps was wildly popular at the time. I guess 35 years later, many of the people polled don't remember, or weren't around to experience those days. I guess it's no surprise that only three out of the seventeen mentions were corps prior to 1980, with one being the Kingsmen ("the first winner" seems an odd rationale for legend status, though they were a fine corps). I guess the 1975 Muchachos should have been the #1 choice...a true legend, as we don't (and won't) ever know what they did, or would have done. DarrenE Posted August 7, 2010 Share Posted August 7, 2010 Three shows from the 80's, one from the early 90's, and one from 2008. Kind of supports what a lot of people on this forum believe. Also, I'll never understand why people love that 89 SVC show so much when the 88 show was better IMO. I won't take the time to point out specifics but the 89 finals performance had some major execution errors that the judges chose to ignore.
