supersop
I don't know about everyone else, but it was more than obvious to me that Madison's obvious weakness right now is their upper brass (kind of ironic for the men from Madison, I know). This year's show was so LOW and middle voice focused, it would be silly to revisit Malaguena just yet unless they can rope in some serious talent level in their soprano/trumpet line. Look no further to the 3 trumpets on the stands at the end of this years show. These guys were the top talent in the section, and they ended playing on middle register notes, quite uncharacteristic of the Scouts. My point, they have a long way to go before 24 Jon Schipper's come running through their doors. Recreating a 1988, 1995, 1996, etc would be admirable, but not yet. IMO, they've got plenty of time to still "rebuild" their brand, use a decent pace, give us a bad ### show, but don't bite off more than you can chew. I think it was more the key the tune was written in than the range the men were able to accomplish. I did notice several spots in the show where they added some octave work later in the season ... and it sounded EXTREMELY GOOD!!!!!!!!! The guys were capable, but the arrangers and staff weren't entirely confident in the Winter when the show was written. For 2011, I would like a "Best Of Madison" show. BigBadMadMan
I feel like all 3 of those could describe this year's show. I knew somebody would point that out. And to a certain degree, you're right. But stylistically, 2010 fits most comfortably into the "showtunes" category. And showtunes, by their very nature, will often encompass elements of jazz and classical. Straight-up classical or straight-up jazz would be beasts of a different color altogether...unless the showtunes WERE straight-up classical or jazz. Jeff Ream
I wouldn't mind a return of Jesus Christ Superstar. How long has it been since a top 12 corps like Madison (that sounds good doesn't it) has done a Broadway based show? so ful of win.
madalumni
I'd love to see them do a great Jazz opener like Los Hermanos de Bop or maybe Minor Booze by Stan Kenton. Maybe a great, powerful ballad with a long sustain on the end that just blows the crowd away. And then a great, rip your face off classical closer like Mozart's Requiem-Confutatis! camel lips
Well, since this year's show went over so well, I think I'd push for another nostalgic year and go with some classic Madison latin pieces, such as Malaguena for instance. warsawstory
Someone needs to do this piece. I'm thinking SCV but Scouts could pull it off. Darius Milhaud's Le Creation du Monde or any of his other jazz inflected pieces. Please, any takers before a certain corps chops it to bits.
