"Very Proud Fossil": Year round drum corps. None of this "May-August" season. Comming in OFF THE STREET to be taught bugle BASICS by the likes of Joe Genero, Hy Drietzer and Jim Donnelly. Drill BASICS by the likes of "Condon & Woods", Carman Cluman and Jack Sullivan. Instructors (Who had "Day Jpbs" as cops, mailmen, truck drivers, and firefighters), that worked for peanuts (Compared to what the "Credentialed" are pulling down today) "Individual" contests in place like Staten Island, & Mineola NY, Startford CT, Boston MA and Newak NJ. Traveling to color guard and indie shows in the dead of winter, practice at the "Center" on Tuesday & Friday nights. Parties with the "Enemy" accross town rivals corps people (That you went to SCHOOL with). "Standstills" at CARNAGIE HALL, "Symphony Hall" in Newark NJ, and the GREAT olde standstill competitions hosted by Drum Corps News at Boston MA, Newark NJ, and New Haven CT. The World Open, CYO Natioansl, State and National Championships of the VFW & American Legion. So very sad to see this all gone away......... Hup234
The beginning of the decade of the 1970s and the gut feeling that things were somehow never going to be the same again, although you couldn't really define why or how. And then you knew you weren't alone in sensing that the day you first saw someone wearing Bill Bastian's black "Drum Corps Died - 1971" t-shirt with the prophetic illustration of the clown dancing on the tombstone. Which, of course, referred to The Cavaliers now infamous "Circus" show. Looking back, that show ( along with Madison's "Alice In Wonderland" ) charted the course that led us to today's Theme shows. Fran Haring
"Standstills" at CARNAGIE HALL, "Symphony Hall" in Newark NJ, and the GREAT olde standstill competitions hosted by Drum Corps News at Boston MA, Newark NJ, and New Haven CT. And the "Round Robin" winter/spring standstill concerts sponsored by the Caballeros, Skyliners, Sunrisers and Hurricanes. Those shows, and others, practically forced corps to learn more new music for the upcoming summer season, so they could debut that music at those concerts. I remember that if a corps showed up at the first of the Round Robin shows and played only music from their previous year's show...but no new stuff.... it was an indication they were having some trouble. The corps that played one or two new tunes.... they were considered to be "ahead of the game." Ah, the psychological warfare that went on during those off-season months!!!!
