You know you're a "Fossil"...

Recommended Posts

If somebody tried to break ranks they got "clothslined", at the very least.

As "late" as 1982 I saw someone in Marion OH at US Open prelims try to break ranks on Phantom Regiment and got "introduced" to a baritone across the chest!!

Ah.... the good old days....

1. drumline playing the show on the metal parts of the school bus seats

2. sneaking across the gym floor to the girls side.

3. You know who Rob Carson is

4. playing triples with felt mallets

5. Connie Cronin's name was on your first pair of sticks

6. Tour meant going to manning bowl for 3 days

Standing on the ready line waiting for your turn for inspection. Watching the sun come up at 5am down the shore in Wildwood at either NJ VFW or Legion shows is something. Quiet too.....

GUIDE-ONS

Hey if we have a full Honor Guard, we have a guide on march with the corps. If we need another body with the Honor Guard then he gets puts in with them. Rather have him march with his..... OK, what do you call the pole and little flag he has?

BANG: The gun

Riding through various states on a school bus with no bathroom facilities

Learning to 'hold it' or pee in devices such as 2 liter soda pop bottles

Customizing your school bus with carpet, and other sundry items

Your back hurting and there were no such things as stands to hold your drums

The 'pit' marched with their instruments (ours grounded, but marched onto the field)

Sopranos, Mellos, French Horn, Contras

A drum sections drill being based almost entirely on formations around the 50 yardline

The horrible bugs at whitewater

Knowing what 'timp-toms' were

Slingerland TDRs & Cut-aways

Getting to a show and competing against a corps you had never heard of (because there were sooo many!)

Junior corps from Canada

tastefully taped drum sticks with stripes

Audiences clapping along because they knew the music

Having our corps director frequenhtly say 'no fraternization' meaning no sneaking across to the girl's side or vice-versa.

Ahhh, the notorious 'inspections'......you tried NOT to sweat. The 'guidons' takes the cake though, I had to laugh at that one, I remember it so well, especially in parades.

And the white bucks, slides, 'cuff-up' your pants before the show, all male horn lines, etc. etc.

Wow, the memories are flooding back.

The hosting DM and CGC returning salutes sitting at the 50 yard line.
