Late Spring Brass Openings

Recommended Posts

I have a student (high school junior) who plays baritone and is hungry to march with a DCI World Class Corps. The issue is that our nearest corps is one of the title contenders in recent years and it's unlikely that a high school kid with no corps experience (yet) is going to walk in and earn a hornline spot.

What I'm interested in is knowing which World Class corps have generally still had a handful of brass spots open in May or going into June the last three or four years. I'm thinking corps in the 10-17th place range..... perhaps lower..... that I can advise this kid to keep his eye on should there be something he could have a chance at late.

Finally, this student is no slacker......... but for a high school kid in this area it's not practical trying to fly to say Toledo or Dubuque or Phoenix once a month for winter camps.

Thanks for any input you good people might have.

Generally, a number of corps, especially in the 10-17 range you're talking about, have a few holes that they are trying to fill up during the late spring camps, and into the beginning part of spring training. I know that Crossmen, Colts and Spirit all had openings in May last year.

Most corps go to non marching vets, people they know personally, people with experience, and the original audition list. There are spots that exist for rookies that late but those individuals usually had conflicts clear up or some other change of plans that prevented them from marching in the first place. If the plan is to show up late and miss early season camps because of a fear of lack of talent, that could create some blow-back from other members. You want more talented people to show up late, not less.

Go to the original auditions, see how it works out. If it's not to be at Corps X, it's not to be. But there are spots (low brass) all winter/spring if you look around. Just don't use that as the primary plan.

Thanks for your responses everyone.....

Our guy is planning to do the original audition for our nearest top contender......... these ideas are the B plan to get a quality experience in case he doesn't make his first choice corps on his first try.

Translation - He would march like to march Carolina Crown but he would march any World Class corps to get the experience rather than sit home watching!

You gotta respect that!

If he auditions and impresses the corps but doesn't make a spot the staff might choose to keep him in mind in case a hole appears or even send his name to another corps.

There are a few names at Crown that appear on other corps websites.
