Blue Stars Switch to Jupiter

Recommended Posts

This is a good post for me to state that I have formally apologized to The Expert. I should have given him the chance to prove himself instead of attacking him.

His posts will prove whether or not he is an expert, not his signature and not me attacking him.

I'm hopeful he accepts my apology with the grace that I should have offered him.

I also apologize to the greater DCP community for dragging the discussion to a lower level instead of a higher one.

I think you're being WAY to hard on yourself. If someone comes onto an online forum and claims expertise, and THEN claims everyone should acknowledge that, then it is entirely fair to say "prove it". If BrassEXPERT wants to be taken seriously, he can provide a disertaion as to why, specifically, the Jupiters are sub par, what the explicit differences are, and what should be changed to correct the problems. Otherwise his/hers is just one more opinion floating around in cyberspace. As for Chewynibblit's endorsement, as far as anyone knows they could be the same 13 year old with different DCP accounts. I find it more than a little interesting that both BrasEXPERT and Chewynibblit (in another thread) had to rely on the validation of another poster to gain legitimacy in their arguments (i.e. "you really would be surprised at their drum corps pedigree etc....) instead of just expressing their thoughts in a manner in which they prove their own validity.

It's funny you say that actually, I suppose sticking up for someone means we are one in the same, and a 13 year old nevertheless. I'm actually a little insulted, I thought my grammar and though processes would come off a little more mature then what a 13 year old would write...sigh, back to school I suppose. Also if you're going to cite my name in your posts might as well spell it correctly right? Thanks BozzlyB.

woah woah... calm down. BozzlyB wasn't trying to insult you, and wasn't claiming that you were either the same person as brassEXPERT or even a 13 year old... He was just saying you could be.

Back on topic; has anyone actually tried the newest line of jupiter horns, or are we going purely on reputation?

I find it quite ironic that you're sticking up for BozzlyB like that, for all we know you could be the same 13 year old using two DCP accounts...just food for thought.

After reading these 15 pages of posts, I am now certain that the Blue Stars days of being a top 12 corps are numbered. They surely will not be able to perform at the level of the previous three years on such inferior equipment. I am amazed that the same staff that has worked so very hard to establish an excellent horn line is so unknowledgeable that it will throw it all away by forcing students to use instruments that are apparently not even worthy of collecting spit. Shame on them !

Unfortunately, I would have to disagree. Oh and hello DCP! Although I do know that the product specialist and representatives of the Quantum series are very well qualified and come from many different backgrounds when it comes to their brass playing experience, there are still some major flaws with the line that make it sub-par to that of a yamaha line. I have personally had a discussion with Pat Sheridan about his participation in the development of the quantum line, and trust that the efforts of the team are certainly moving the quality of the line is a positive direction, but the fact still remains that the lines that have switched to the series have complained about the instruments themselves or have had significant changes in sound quality that are apparent to the audience. I know of a few people from Jersey Surf that have specifically stated that the switch to jupiter was a great opportunity to get new horns, but the playability of the trumpets and mellophones is very limited. There is way too much back pressure and they don't respond as well over the range of the entire instrument. The evidence is apparent when phantom made the switch to Jupiter, when their low brass sound that they have been famous for, yes EVEN AFTER the switch to Bb horns, was immediately lost. I personally cannot attest to the quality of the tubas, but it seems as if their projection is terrible compared to that of a dynasty of yamaha horn.

There also seems to be some discussion between comparing the top quality instruments of yamaha and jupiter, which is completely irrelevant to the true discussion at hand. Yamaha horn lines use the Xeno, the profession quality instrument for the Yamama trumpet series, but the Quantum line by Jupiter does not use it's professional trumpet model. That said, for one to compare the quality of the two professional horns and say that jupiter is superior is ridiculous, because the one instrument comparison has nothing to do with the rest of the instruments made by Jupiter. For a very long period of time, Jupiter put out instruments (concert) that could not compare to any of the other companies that mass produce instruments that are machine made (i.e. King, Yamaha, Getzen, etc...). As of recent, the quality of the tubas has increased significantly as Pat was brought onto the product development staff for the concert horns as well. If you ever get tot see him play live, you might have the opportunity to see his rainbow colored tuba. Each color represents another time he has sent the horn back to receive an additional modification to try and make the best horn in the business. Again, this is concert horns we are talking, not the marching series.

Just my two cents. I don't think professional Jupiter trumpets play nearly as well as Xenos do. Still a little bit too much back pressure and a lack of definite core to the sound. Take what I have to say for what its worth, because after all, I am the expert.

Wasn't Pat Sheridan's work with Jupiter from 3 years ago? They have done for more R&D since then. Did Pat help with the changes in the Gen2 tubas Regiment got?
