Cadets Uniform

Recommended Posts

Personally, I think copying someone else's thoughts and reposting them on another forum is wrong. Yes, it's a public forum and one takes that risk, but come on...

If that person wanted to post what he said on the Facebook page, he would've. Pretty underhanded way of making a point, IMO.

ditto every word.

Good luck with that, Nick.

Tekk and I have been at finals for the past 2 (maybe 3 years) and have had every intention of meeting face to face. But short of maybe spotting someone that may be him in the stands, it hasn't happened.

He's a drum corps ninja.

I can verify this -- Tekk was supposedly headed to a Crown practice at East last year and *I* never saw him :-)

Ninja indeed

(well actually he didn't make it up to Allentown but the storie's better if he's ninja)

Paragraph 1 - yeah i know, its not that surprising. That said, I have a history of annoying people in the organization enough, and I didn't want to be THAT direct, by having my words on their page. It may seem like a minor distinction, but this is a public site for all corps, wheras that is their facebook page, and if I'm there, I intend to be generally supportive... Fact is, I know who did it (not that I know the person), and it was already taken down in the middle of the night when i doubt many folks saw it, so no harm, no foul.

Paragraph 2 - wait, really? people on an internet forum dont have much say in the matter?? Dang, and all this time I thought otherwise. Seriously though, you, I, and pretty much everyone else knows it's irrelevant, but so is having 27 prediction threads, arguing over who should have won 8 months after the season ending, or having 3000 lolcorps pictures. We do this because at best its fun, engaging, nice to meet / talk to new folks (and then meet them in real life perhaps later...you and I are still working on that last part). At worst its a cheap form of entertainment....watching people mouth off pointlessly, aka...the internet version of a train wreck. Still...here we are....

Slight non-sequiter (but actually not)...and I would be stunned if you didnt already know this: There was a certain championship-winning show that was going to be performed with the entire corps in street clothes...just like the guard. I'll give you a vague, non-direct hint as to what that show was...um YOU MARCHED IT!

Now, i've only seen that video about a thousand times, and unless my memory is going at the ripe old age of 26, im pretty sure they wore the maroon and gold. Hmm....

OH WOW!!! I DIDN'T KNOW THAT AT ALL!!!!!

Thanks for the history lesson. I'm pretty sure I know a lot more than you do about that year, so nothing really surprises me.

And yeah, I know what these forums are about. My point was simply we need to relax and not get bent out of shape about a uniform. Is that better Nick?

DID YOU ORDER THE NEW (CODE RED)UNIFORMS???!!!!!

I just had a mental image of Hop, in a Cadet uniform, sitting in the witness box yelling "YOU'RE GOD ###### RIGHT I DID!!!"

I feel like I can relate to that. Though I've never marched (it is easily the single biggest regret of my life), I'd probably be disappointed in not getting to wear the traditional uniform as well.

That said, the uniform is not what I regret missing out on. I regret missing out on the experience. I regret missing out on the work ethic, the comraderie, the opportunity to push myself to do something I've never done before, and the chance to call myself a Cadet.

If this issue of the uniform doesn't prevent your student from moving forward with the corps this summer, I ask that you check back with him/her at the end of the season and see if the uniform itself kept them from having what I hear, is a most incredible experience.

I know it won't. I told them so. I'm sure in time they'll realize I was ( and you are too) right. Trust me, there's been more discussion than what I've said on here. That student will be fine, and they know I'll be there to cheer them on when life allows ( and they know it won't be in a stadium with a roof on it )

Doesn't lessen the sting now.

See, I get tagged a Cadet hater. Hardly so. I criticize everyone who I feel deserves it. Really, the last two years, BD has gotten more than the Cadets have, but like many say, really I ciriticize George, not the corps or kids. I teach with 3 alums. I have many friends who marched there. I thought about it my age out year, but I realized Crossmen was my first love and then real life got in the way and I stayed in DCA. I used to regret not marching DCI, but I've gotten past it. My DCA experiences have led to many great thing in life, and that's enough for me. But really, the product on the field by the Cadets has been some of my all time favorites.

and regardless of what I think of Hop's decisions, positions and pronouncements over the years, I'd NEVER tell a kid not to go there, unless I knew they couldn't hack it. it takes a special mentality to be a Cadet, and not all kids have that. This one has it, and I told them to go for it, don't worry about anything but listening to the staff and playing great and having fun.

( and I expect good stories come August )

What is that supposed to mean!!?

The Cadets aren't top of the line?

Again, reading into my words. Where did I say the Cadets aren't top of the line?

I didn't. But I won't tell a kid to go somewhere, spend a lot of hard earned money, knowing full well they'd never make it and/or hate it there. That is setting a kid up for failure.

They will have a good show, the uniforms will be "interesting", but they will have lost a lot of the core support they've worked for over the years.

1 last post...

I've had several PM's with a younger Alumni of The Cadets and he's given me a few things to think about.

Please bear with me as I try to articulate a few of my thoughts.

When I first heard of the uniform change I immediately saw red. I was furious. As I stated in previous posts I tried to explain those feelings. I honestly was not attacking the current members and I want to stress that. It's important to me that be understood. I have zero expectation that non-Cadets will understand the devotion that some of us have for our uniform. That's fine too.

Now for the epiphany...

It's still my Corps. But it's not. Yes, FHNSAB. But, it's THEIR Corps now. It's theirs to do with as they wish. It appears to me that the younger Alumni do not have the same attachment to the uniform that some of us do from "back in the day". That doesn't make MY devotion any less. It doesn't change MY experience. Sure I'd love it if they felt the same way as I do. But as those of you that attempted to force your opinion on those of us that feel the way we do, it's also not right for us to force our opinions on them. Shocker, right? I nearly passed out when that sunk in. You're probably right that some of us were being selfish. I told myself that protecting that tradition would benefit the current members so that they too could enjoy that aspect of Cadetdom. Turns out that they don't seem to need it. Which is fine. Regardless of whatever uniform The Cadets wear in the future that iconic West Point uniform is still an important part of me. It can never be taken away. Whatever values the current members have are a part of them as well. Who am I to try to take them away?

Finally, if any of my posts have offended any of the current membership I sincerely apologize.

I remember vividly how happy and excited I was the day I was sent into the uniform room to try on uniform jackets as I was being fitted for my entire uniform. It was a dream come true and an honor to put on that traditional Cadets uniform. I also remember being at a show in 1984 and all the respect I had for my friend after seeing him in his Garfield Cadets uniform. I am very surprised by your statement that "It appears to me that the younger Alumni do not have the same attachment to the uniform that some of us do from "back in the day"". If that is true, that is sad.

you must be a good teacher if your student was that good then to make cadets.

I'm one of many on that staff, and their primary point of instruction is a Cadets alum. I'd love to claim their skills as my success, but that's not anywhere near the case. Honestly, they have the gift and work ethic. Especially for the Cadets, that's 75% of the battle.

They do however respect my opinion. ( especially since they bought my old Jetta ). And I wouldn't lie to them or any other kid.

I'm lucky. I have had former students go on and march Cavies, Cadets, Bluecoats, Surf, Phantom and Glassmen. But I won't take credit for anything other than telling them if they wanted it bad enough, they'd make it happen. Trust me, I'm not Mr. Chops, even i my heyday. But I wanted it and worked my ### for it, and I know that will get a kid farther than just having hands/lips.
