Only in the pre-show is my understanding.

kinda like controlling the sound system from the field unless it's semis and you're in 3rd

I'm not saying that I support them, but I was wondering. Since electric guitars/basses are allowed in DCI now, are string instruments?

a lot of study must go into the training with the DCI judges to judge the on field performance of the solo rock guitarist. I'd imagine it's not an easy instrument to judge for the quality of the performance and the musician's level of profiency and expertise, along with the level of delivery, control, demand, creativity, integration with other musical sections of the Corps, etc and other good levels of musicianship.

But somebody's got to do it. Glad it's not me. I like the sound of my rock guitars, but I just have to defer to the judges with this on the quality levels of the rock guitarists in the shows. I'm so lost on this that unlike other people, I don't even know what caption judge (s) judge the rock guitarist in the show.

Although I do not like it, certainly in the anything goes pre-show "anything" is fair game, but I am not sure about the actual judged performance. Anyway, here they are! These fall into the "any electronic string instrument" category you say are allowed:

They work great...we used a cello in our MB show last fall...and will again this fall.

I'd love to see some DCI corps use a bunch of electric string instruments. I think Crown or Regiment would make great use of them.

Those do in fact fall in the "any electronic string instrument" category and you will see one maybe two of those this summer.

I guess you can say my real reason of questioning this is because a lot of corps the last two years used string synth "effects". Personally, I don't like that sound, and I'd rather hear the real thing. Or maybe I'm just picky.

I wouldn't have a problem with real string instruments such as violins, violas and cellos as long as they're bell-front instruments.

and they for sure allow piano sound throughout the show

Ah, which begs the question: is the piano a string instrument, or a percussion instrument? ;)

I wouldn't have a problem with guitar or bass, as long as they weren't amplified.

I say it's time someone grows a pair and goes with a 10 man amped hornline, guitar, bass, trap set in the pit and 8-9 other pit players/snyths, etc. and a 100+ member guard.

It's legal. Paradigm shift time.
