Corps Named for Physical Structures?

Recommended Posts

What corps have been named for physical structures - like the Bridgemen for the Bayonne Bridge, or the Bushwackers for the bar with the same name?

The HELLGATERS from Queens, NY ... named after the HELLGATE BRIDGE in Astoria

:-)

Dare I even mention th NY SKYLINErs?

"Physics":

St Catherine's of Sienna "Queensmen" were actually named after the NYC "Burough" of "Queens", which is where the Parish was located.

The Crossmen (Another merger corps from Philly) was actually named after the olde CROSS American Legion Post. A few other corps named after their VFW or Legion Posts were the Norman Prince "Princemen" and the F. Riley Post Reilly Raiders.

Not exactly physical structures, but here are a few named for their geo-political locations: There was a corps back in the 1960's named the "Manhattanaires," and on Long Island the "Lindenaires" from Lindenhurst, and the "Islanders" from Babylon. Pretty cool to be named for a borough, a town, or a whole island. :thumbup:

How about Preston Scout House??? However, I don't ever remember seeing a picture of a/the Scout House in Preston. Does it even exist? Or are they considered a "structure"????

"In 1936, Wilf Blum, Assistant scoutmaster, needed a meeting hall for the 1st Preston Scout Troop. He approached Mr Bernhardt, owner of the Rock Springs Brewery, to use their old stables. Mr Bernhardt gladly gave the Scouting Association a 99 year lease on the property,and the love affair with Preston Scout House began".

I knew a brewery HAD to be a part of this organization!!!!!! :thumbup:

Hi Rich:

Thanks for the history. You are very accurate. Every parade now that we do in downtown Preston (which is now Cambridge. Announcers, we are from Cambridge, not Preston) starts at Scout House and we march up King Street as they did in the '30s. What a crowd we had on July 1st, Canada Day, bringing up the rear, with all the guard with Canadian flags. The boys rebuilt the building to be a wonder of architecture. It's beautiful with big wooden beams and all. We are named for something proud.

Thanks

The Seattle Imperials were formed by a split from the Buddhist Boy Scout corps.

They were named after an early supporter, the Imperial Lanes bowling alley !!!
