But is the Tier a range of mountains or something else? Drive by there on the way to Rochester and spent a week in the lower (Ithica) part of the Finger Lakes and never saw an explaination. Hell I've driven on the ST Expressway and even know where Horseheads got it's name but....

I think it's primarily the general geographic collection of those counties -- they kind of form a horizontal shelf/tier along the bottom (southern) border of New York. Correspondingly, the counties across the border in Pennsylvania form the Northern Tier...

No one has mentioned Bridgemen yet.

Here's a few old names from the NYC area, not exactly structures, but geo-political physical regions:

St. Catherine's Queensmen -- Named for the borough of Queens

The Manhattanaires -- Named for the borough of Manhattan

The Lindenaires -- Named for the town of Lindenhurst, Long Island

Babylon Islanders -- Named for the whole of Long Island

And one for an actual structure in the Borough of Queens:

The Hellgaters -- Named for the Hellgate Bridge over the east River
