GeneralTsoChicken
Apparently there is a difference between the two. Indeed, there is a difference. I'd venture to guess, however, that on the TOC sheets, without DT, Cavaliers would probably be back on top again. I think in this situation, specifically, it is the difference in judges reads. danielray
While they do what they do very well, from a design perspective they take the least amount of risk of any top corps out there. If your program is strikingly similar year after year after year, what is there really to reward from a design perspective other than level? Cadets, BD, Crown all take much more significant risks year on year than Cavaliers.

If your program is strikingly similar year after year after year, what is there really to reward from a design perspective other than level? Cadets, BD, Crown all take much more significant risks year on year than Cavaliers. Wait. What? Crown is doing a college marching band show (see Western Carolina from last year). They are doing a fantastic job at it and it is very entertaining, but not a lot of new territory there. The fact that their show does not have a lot of risk or depth is why they will probably not win, because they perform VERY well. Cadets are not doing ANYTHING new this year. The most innovative thing they are doing is the two uniforms on the field, which was done by the 1987 Skyryders. Still a great show, but nothing new from them. BD is copying the formulas that they have used the last few years. 2010, very innovative. Tons of Risk. 2011 is derivative. Also, they stand around while playing A LOT. Not a lot of risk when you stand stand still and play as much as they do. Cavaliers do have similar looking drill every year because it is Michael Gaines. He has a certain personality and style as does Leon May, Jeff Sacktig, Jay Murphey, Myron Rosander, & Pete Weber (among others). This year The cavaliers are doing lots of things that have never been done before and that is why they are getting rewarded even when they get outperformed. Anyways, as far as the topic is concerned, I don't think Debbie has anything against The Cavaliers. She does slam a few groups from time to time. I have heard Crown folks and maybe even some cadets folks talk about how she HATES them, so it is not exclusive to one corps. Honestly, I think people go after some judges and talk about their biases on here too much. Are there some weak judges out there? Yes, but I don't think judges go into shows purposely wanting to screw over one specific team. If they do, they don't last long. Now with all of that being said, I think she is fairly unpleasant as an adjudicator. Her demeanor and her tapes come across as harsh to lots of groups, so I can see why she gets labeled the way she does, even if it is not entirely accurate.
dcialumni1989
Some judges are harder than others, but they usually hate everyone equally.
dcialumni1989
I personally don't believe Debbie Torchia is against the Cavaliers. I believe "Debbie" is just a horrible adjudicator for Drum Corps International in general.. I have personally made this very complaint to many other adjudicators in DCI for many, many, years now. That's how strongly I feel about HER work. Dave Martinez Venice Beach CA Agreed 100%
YogiBear
No. I'm saying squatting to march backwards... or 'drop and move' I think is their term, and the extreme bent legs on forward marching make the members look short. When someone focuses on member projection being a facet of the ge visual ensemble's strengths, this would hurt the Cavaliers. It would be nice for the GE sheets to EXPLICITLY remove individuals and their projection, etc, from the sheets... because that is being judged elsewhere. Cavaliers don't squat and march backwards. In my 5 years of marching, i NEVER heard a staff member say to "squat to march backwards" they actually discourage that. The only time you have a level change is doing a jazz run. Which they only do at 4 to 5. don't pretend like you know their style of marching. But i'm sure you're gonna have some witty comeback statement on this so whatever.

Backwards bent leg marching comes across as a squat, regardless of what staff members say. And yes, they do use the phrase 'drop and move'. And we've already established I like it and think it works for the cavaliers. So try to contrive what I'm saying into an attack. Stock.
