What are some of the Major Things Crown Needs to do to take the 2012 W

Recommended Posts

There are many experienced people that post on DCP including current and former DCI members and staff. I would like some good reflection on what you believe has honestly held Crown back from the title over the last few years and what they need to do this year in order to really compete for the title.

Not much.

Most areas of performance have been pretty solid (near championship quality) for several years. Their brass performance and writing is certainly their strong point. They continue to put out a top notch color guard program year after year.

They just need a year where all the stars align so to speak.

Winning a DCI Championship is really hard. Cracking the top 3 is really hard. They've got to beat the three-headed monster of BD, Cavies and Cadets.

I'm not Crowns biggest fan but you cannot deny that they perform the snot out of what they do.

1. design a show that can win

2. clean the show to championship quality

3. profit (err... win)

I am a believer that most years, there are only 2 shows designed at a level that can win. Sometimes there are 3, and sometimes there is only 1. Then, if you have a show that CAN win, you have to clean it better than the other guys you are competing against.

Blue Devils, Cavaliers, and Cadets all have design staffs AND instructional staffs that have done this routinely. They have the total package. And even though they have the total package, sometimes they miss also. The fact is, because these groups are so experienced at "playing the game" and making sure all the boxes are checked, it is very difficult to beat them all in the same year.

In fact, it is so difficult that since 1992, only ONE TIME has a corps beat the Cavaliers, Cadets, and BD on finals night... and that was in 2008.

Drum a little better + a bit of the X factor....

If their percussion were as good as their brass then they'd be close.... d*mn close!

A show with the X factor would help, a Machine, a Spartacus, an Angels & Demons etc. A show that gets the crowd AND the judges on their side...

I think they're about four years too late to take him anywhere. (Is the 2012 W the same model as the 2008 W?):tongue:

One exciting thing about quality of the top corps is any of them can come out smoking hot in the early season and any of them can be bringing it home at the end of the season. The pre-season predictions are quite different than those after the first couple of weeks, and even those later ones are so very different from the predication threads towards the end of the season. And in some cases, they've changed between Allentown and Semifinals.

Well, the best way to look at why Crown has not won Finals is to go back and look at the scoring captions at Finals the last few years. ( such caption breakdowns are still posted and readily available to you ) There you will find exactly what you need to know as to what tripped Crown up in any given year compared to those Corps that scored ahead of Crown that year. Each year is different, so what might have tripped Crown up one year ( ie, percussion score ) may not be what tripped Crown up in other years ( ie, Guard ) Thats the best way in my opinion to find out what " held Crown back from the Title over the last few years ".

As for the 2nd question, ie " what do they need to do this year in order to win ", its really impossible to say. Thats because we really don't know the ability level, and design level, performance levels, etc just yet of the other Corps for this particular year. That said, in general in order to win a DCI Title, a Corps needs to have an outstanding visual design program that is demanding, creative, unique, and performed better than other Corps on Finals Night. It needs a Guard that finishes no lower than 3nd, and the Corps needs no weakness in any caption. It also has to knock off the Cadevaliers ( trifecta ), all three Corps in the same year that win 95% of the DCI Titles last 25 years (it is rare, but it can be done as Phantom Regiment did it in 2008 by less than a tenth of a point ). Its also imperative that a challenger have the luck of the draw in the judging panel for Finals Night as well. If Crown ( or any other Corps ) is able to knock off the Cadevaliers, they stand a very good chance of winning the title this year. But its not enough to beat 2 out of the 3. All 3 must be beaten on Finals Night. Not impossible. Just very difficult and exceedingly rare to do. If one a betting man, its always a good bet that one of the Cadevaliers is going to win DCI. We may quiblle on which one, as we can't always predict which one, but one of the Cadevaliers most likely will win it again here in 2012. History, tradition, pedigree, recruiting, and staff formation are on their side. Its not quite a lock. But its the closest thing to any lock in any sport competition out there, imo.

They have to have THE show.

Performance quality is nearly on par or above in all captions, the design is what will have to carry them across the finish line.

While last year was exceptionally well performed, and all-around fun for the audience and performers, it was not THE show.

However, the show this year just might have what it takes...
