Ron H
One of the delightful things about drum corps shows is how various organizations put together coherent shows based upon music from such divergent sources. After looking at the 2012 show thread I'm looking forward to the clever music combinations by many corps such as the Cabs (Cirque du Soliel/Bach/Ravel!), the Buccaneers (Lortz,Reich, Bjork and Tchaikovsky!), Carolina Gold (Grieg/Coldplay/Imogen Heap!) and Minnesota Brass(Gershwin/Ellington/Pink Floyd/Lady Gaga/Barber?!). Fusion Core and Kilties' shows also look like wonderfully weird mash-ups as well. I love it when corps mix wildly different sources of music and come up with something stylistically consistent in an 11-minute production. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Do you have favorite DCA shows that manage to knit together weird or odd music combinations into coherent works of art? And, without getting into flaming territory, are there shows that tried but didn't quite make it?
JoeSop1
I know you asked specifically about DCA corps, but I had to chime in with this. I was/am particularly inspired by the mash-ups of the Casper Troopers in the early 70's. At the pen of Mike Duffy, the Troopers entertained with an appropriate platter of music, new and old. It's apparent that these shows were carefully crafted to work creatively, functionally (for the talent) and with consideration for the limitations regarding keys at the time. Delightfully coherent! Years later, I sat down with Mike and his lovely wife Sherry to talk about those days and the creativity involved. "Don't be afraid to try different things. If you're bored with the status-quo; change it". Mike leaned forward with and air of humility as one whose been at the top and said "be sure you and the people listening are having fun. It's contagious."
Fran Haring
Do you have favorite DCA shows that manage to knit together weird or odd music combinations into coherent works of art? I don't know if this counts... but during my days with the Sunrisers, we managed to knit together a group of weird and odd people into a coherent work of art.
