Jeff Ream
IMHO...I would hate to pay to be a member of a corps and only have 2 shows... well, a corps has to be realistic with their budget and travel schedule. if the administration is upfront with the membership about that, it should not be an issue
bill
Be that as it may, nothing beats an actual score, opportunity to get judges' feedback, as well as the opportunity to evaluate your competition IMO. The Kilties philosophy is no performance has any greater value than another.......all of them are of equal importance whether it is a field show performance, a parade, a concert, etc. Hence you best (as a member) strive for nothing short of excellence at every single event and rehearsal...bar none or you are held accountable, and called out. We exist to perform and love to do so; no matter what venue. The activity is very fragile and to try and strengthen it in some small way by bringing drum corps to those that normally are not exposed..........we feel, only helps in a positive fashion. Our goals, satisfactions and accolades come from entertaining the fans and them enjoying themselves........and striving for excellence. All we can control, is ourselves.
LegalEagle50
But sir, it does. Maybe not to your members, but to the judges who critique you, it does. They see your show grow, the improvement made and score you accordingly. Because as much as the fact that any given show can acheive any score, how often have we heard the statement of "the judges scored the corps too high, or too low, on their first read"? Additionally, you may not feel the same way, but many people feel that competition truly brings out an edge in performance that is not there at any other time, due to the adreniline rush.

jrmscreamer
Is it usual for some corps to start competing in August? Tampa Bay Thunder originally had three more shows before 8/18, but all three were cancelled; one because the show couldn't get enough sponsors, and two because the host corps aren't competing this season (Alliance and Sun Devils) So, as luck would have it, our first competition is now 8/18. Oh, well. We're bigger and better than the corps was last year. We will definitely surprise some people this year!

Additionally, you may not feel the same way, but many people feel that competition truly brings out an edge in performance that is not there at any other time, due to the adreniline rush. Philosophy aside...how about the LACK of shows to compete in the midwest since the death of DCM? DCI pushed that circut right over the cliff and killed the local shows for the most part with it. When I marched Sr. Kilts we had AT LEAST two shows every other weekend to compete in with the juniors and seniors. Now what's left? For the midwest seniors to try and get to DCA shows in the east is not finacially viable given fuel cost and travel time alone. I think Kilties, Govies and Brass understand that competition brings out the edge but where IS the "local" adreniline rush? DCA east corps had the advantage of being in each others backyard for all those years and competing every weekend. How many of those corps would make the trip to Detroit, Chicago or St. Paul to make a show today? The midwest corps would LOVE to go head to head with the east at least once a month. But. Reality sucks.
