Yeah, I thought about that, Jim, but since it was a junior/senior contest I thought I'd include it anyway.

LOL, couldn't resist since a former DCPer used to post a grumble anytime I mentioned All-Age on the DCI Forum. Also a kick reading those scores since I competed against Interstatesmen and Blessed Sac when they came back in the mid 1970s.

Oh, and belated Happy Birthday!

And happy belated B-day to bstar and linda (I hit 55 next month).....

I wouldn't begin my marching career for a couple of years after this date but the idea of this is not lost on me ... I checked around and oddly enough there didn't seem to be a lot of shows held on the 4th for some reason that probably had a lot to do with the day it fell on the calendar ... I know those of us who marched in local circuits in and around the Tri-State (NY, NJ & Conn) had shows every weekend. Thanks for the memory.

Man! This topic really gob-smacked me.

It was 50 years ago this month I marched my first contest with St. Catherine's Queensmen, as a rookie 1st soprano. The show was at Emmaus, PA, and I was so hyped that, after the initial "Mark Time, March!", I went into some kind of trance. The first thing I recall was the halt in the concert formation, halfway through the show.

After we trooped the stands, I asked the vet next to me how I had done. "You? I didn't pay any attention to you." Rookie reality check.

One reason there were few corps contests on the 4th of July was the obligation to march numerous parades for the Legion and VFW sponsors. Many corps did at least 2 that day. One year when I taught Garfield, we did 4 parades AND a contest.

St Joes from Batavia used to take a midwest "tour" over the 4th of July to compete against the Midwestern powerhouses when I was in the corps!
