Phantom&Phitch
Any and if so what would it be for next year if Madison ends up placing higher than Cavaliers - I know this thread is pure speculation but I'm interested in the views other people have on this. Mad Mello
Both corps have a ton of history behind them. I don't think one year will cause a seismic shift one way or the other.
charlie1223
I think that if you are joining an all guy corps the fraternal traditions, history and environment will be more of a pull than placement. But, if Cavies show design problems have spread through the members morale that might be the more potent issue.
AmFlag61
In the late 50s & early 60s there were only 2 Midwest Corps that caused us Cavaliers concern (not worry), Madison & Belleville. I've waited years for the Scouts to reemerge into the top tier. Their recent victories over the Cavaliers may be momentary, but they have always had the potential to upset the proverbial applecart. Anyone who counts the Scouts or Cavaliers "out" is clearly delusional. There are many Corps who have, over the years, appealed to me Intellectually. But only 3 have owned me Emotionally; Cavaliers, Cadets, and Scouts.

rkfdPRphan
I think it would take more than one year for this to be a problem. IF Cavies were to end up around 8th this year and stay in that position for 2 or 3 more years, then YES, it would IMO cause a talent recruiting problem. I think the numbers of young men would still come for tryouts, but the overall abilities of the recruitment pool would suffer. I've talked to a lot of kids at tryouts and being on a winning corps is very high on their list. They like to migrate to a corps they see as a favorite or one that is moving up. The kids also seem to know a lot more about the staff than I do. They have their favorite educators and will do almost anything to tryout for that corps. A staff change, IMO, will change recruiting much more than last year's championship placement (unless you finished 1st or 2nd). Having said that, I dont think the Cavies will have a problem just because of one year with the rebuilding of staff and such.
AmFlag61
Samurai (one of the most totally realized Themes ever) was followed by The Great Divide (less than memorable) followed by Mad World & XtraaordinarY. 15 Minutes will be followed by...whatever. No Player hits a home run every time at bat. Sometimes you strike out. And, may I point out, it's only the 5th inning right now. Quote from a Madison Alum: "Lets not forget, these are the Cavaliers we're talking about...I don't think there's a snow balls chance in you know where that the Cavies are going to curl up in fetal position, do you? skajerk
The Scouts 12 year streak (1973-1985) didn't seem to hurt The Cavies. What would one year do?
Dave_G
I don't think it will have any impact. These aren't exactly two noob corps we're talking about there, they've been around the activity longer then almost every other corps out there. Sometimes designs are just flat out misses, happens to every corps at one time or another. The question is what changes are made to improve the product the next season, especially when it comes to a corps that's been at the top of the activity as long as the Cavaliers have. bobjective
Being a Scout alum that matched in the 80s. I can say that although we were having a great deal of success, we always pulled for the Cavies' success. There is a special brotherhood to being in an all male corps. And being that we are the only two remaining all male corps, it is in the best interest for dci as a whole for the Scouts and the Cavaliers to remain strong in the activity. Yes, the Scouts want to be great. And, yes the Cavaliers want to be great. These are two proud organizations with rich pride and tradition. One or two off off years would not seriously effect the recruiting for the Cavies. Because it is what it is, only the Scouts are "The Scouts." And, only the Cavaliers are The Cavaliers."
