TROOPERS! Where are you?

Recommended Posts

I know the reps from those years. Saw them live each time.

And obviously, reading comprehension is lacking. I said there is a way to have traditional Trooper elements in a show, even while moving forward.

in 09 they showed they can do it.

Yeah, when they finally do it like in 09 nobody is happy for them. Instead they keep saying how they shouldn't have been there.

funny. the last time they truly embraced their heritage was the last time they made finals in 2009.

for the first time since 1986.

so really.....is the new way working out? because we have seen them try and take this approach many times between 1986 and 2008. Didn't work out so those years did it?

Well, they 'embraced their heritage' many times over the years and placed lower than they did in 2010 and 2011....their lowest placing ever is a show that was more "pure Trooper" than even the late 60's/early 70's.

Actually, if you look at the last 15 years the most 'Trooper-ish' shows resulted in their lowest placements.

this is very true many cadet alumni felt the same and Allentown wasnt that far.........some older alumni dont want any involvement now

Yes, but luckily there are LOTS who have become more interested and involved, thanks to the efforts of Dave Shaw and Greg Cinzio, and the better-late-than-never change in how YEA! views the alumni. At least now at the monthly alumni meetings YEA! is represented and often makes presentations...inc Hoppy at many of the meetings.

thats a good point..im sure people also go back to the glory days as when change is discussed it usually ends up there

well sure Hop wants the support and money..lol..but thats fine thats what alumni do...still many have gone to the meetings and walked out on Hop also but as things progress, it would be silly to think ALL will follow...some would rather just stay where they were within rather than be part of what it may represent today

Oh, you are right...there are some who want nothing to do with the modern Cadets as part of YEA!. I have spoken to some of them. I'm just happy the situation today is better than it was just a few years back.

Morris and Ottoes have some tough decisions to make in the next few weeks here...seems pretty blatantly obvious that David Reeves and whoever wrote that drill should be out of their jobs. After tonights performance it looks like Troop may really be on the cusp of not making the Friday night show if these trends continue.

My advice FWIW is to wipe the slate clean and get some younger blood in there and see where they can take it. I always think it's a bad idea to get "big name" guys that write for other corps to come in and design because you're never going to get their best ideas or full attention. Sometimes it works (like bones this year), but most times it doesn't. Get new blood in there that will take complete ownership of the product and make me get out of my seat and CHEER! I don't want to be lulled to sleep with "lush" melodies and extreme unnecessary musical nuance that may be exciting for music theory elitists, but not the general public that attends these shows.

Troopers should hold winter camps in Denver and get an airline sponsorship from United, Continental or Southwest with comp tickets for members to fly in for camps in exchange for logos and appearances.

Troopers should hold ALL rehearsals in Salt Lake City.

It is centrally located in the west, equal distance from Seattle, SF, LA, Phoenix, Denver, etc.

Has an airport that is a major hub and services several budget airlines.

Loads and loads of band kids there who would definitely participate if it was more local.

There are incredible facilities available out there, all you really need to do is ask.

Community support for music programs is probably the best in the country (not necessarily in cash, but involvement).

It is sort of a no-brainer.

Someone said on another post that Utah seesms to love drum corps but can't get a corps off the ground. Your suggestions could be part of a solution.
