Not certain?

Because he's VOReason.

That's what he does. He cannot resist any opening to take a shot at the Empire Statesmen.

VOReason: Empire Statesmen hater extraordinaire.

He has turned it into an art form of sorts.

Bottom line is that if you keep putting out 1990s high school band shows, that ain't what can win on the field in the 2010s.

This year's finals was the first DCA show I ever attended. I was quite entertained by Empire's show (more than Cadets2, scores notwithstanding) and felt that in some respects, their take on Las Vegas was more fun than Spirit's had been earlier in the year. It didn't make me think of 1990s H.S. bands, but that may be because I'm not a specialist in that regard. I'm very disappointed that they're abandoning drum corps, but I wish them well.

I do have a question about the 2012 show: were Empire's poker chip props inspired by Spirit's props, or did Spirit sell/give them to Empire?

Since getting involved with DCA in 2004, Empire Statesmen have consistently been one of my favorites each year regardless of placement. Holy Scheit, their tribute to Maynard show has been played so many times in my house that my family has forced me to go to headphones!

I don't know the reasons behind this and don't really care. It sucks big time as a fan.

Best of luck to Dave and the rest of the people involved with the Empire association.

Let me say a few GOOD things about Statesmen. First, they ARE wildly entertaining and the show alway brings a smile to your face! Obviously their record of consistent top 5 placements is VERY impressive! They are indeed a FINE drum corps and always have been. But they have found themselves in recent years unable to be competitive with the type of program they have been putting on the field. Cabs, also a perrenial contender found themselves in a similar position. But unlike the Cabs, who have retooled their staff and their program to compete alongside the more modern paradigm of the activity, showing a lot of guts and moxy in the process, Empire has simply decided to take their marbles and go home. It is VERY unfortunate, and a real loss to the activity. DCA needs corps like Empire and corps like Empire need DCA, 'cause without a circuit they will find themselves with a VERY limited market for their product.

yeah I'll miss them a lot. I mean if you go back to 88, they've been a consistent player...that thwy were 6th last year says a lot about how the rest of DCA got better around them.

I still say Miss Saigon was one of the best DCA shows all time, and the Wizard of Oz show is one of my favorite Empire years ever

david has 2 problems from what i understand. #1 dwindeling crowds. he can't keep all the travel and expense with ever smaller crowds. # 2 electronics. i thnk that is self explanatory. it just changes things way to much. but with attendance going down all the time, well empire NEEDS the crowds. in any case this is a sad day. we already have sky, cru,and many other corps gone. so when people say DCA is growing and is healthy, let's just say that's denial. things are not well in DCA. and the sad thing is............i remember when DCA started. and the promise it gave senior corps.

This is not denying anything you just wrote, but crowds at the southern shows have grown or stayed steady over the past several years. It is more than likely because the same groups keep coming back, making the show consistently good, but I guess my point is that they are perhaps shifting nationally. Then again, if crowds are a big deal, why did Empire not just perform at a couple of local DCI shows? The crowds would still find them enteraining. Not sure if crowds are the true probelm...
