Show Sponsor's Financial Responsibility?

Recommended Posts

This question is purely out of ignorance. What, exactly, is the show sponsor's responsibility in running a show? What does DCA provide? How much does each corps receive for their appearance? What, if any, incentive is there for local show sponsors to seek out corps from out of state or out of region? Does the show sponsor have any say as to who attends a given show or is that done purely by DCA?

Just questions I do not know the answers to, not trying to say if it is right or wrong. I don't want to stir up a hornet's nest here...just trying to get info.

Thanks,

Dan

Anyone?...

EVERY situation is different,.........

The more recent DCA shows our team here in Erie have sponsored (at times when our corps was not competing on the field) DCA provided the DCA member corps to assure the show met the minimum requirements as a sanctioned show, the judges, show operations, and a lot of etc. Once the show was offially a go, the communication and support from DCA was exceptional. DCA provided a very detailed guide, that outlines minimum requirements along with a lot of great/built-in recommendations.

From there, other performing corps, competing or not, was pretty much open to us so long as the schedule/format met the standard DCA requirements. DCA had recommendations on other competing corps, and we have ties to many exhibition corps,............We negotiated and executed performance contracts directly with each corps,..........and the rest was on us like, securing the stadium, rehearsal sites, concessions, promotion, financial risk, and a ton of etc.

The show sponsor has to pay for the facilities that are to be used, a set DCA judges fee, hotel stay for the judges, travel to and from the airport-hotel-show for the judges, food for judges, selling tickets & awards (if they so choose).

As for the corps who attend, it's all about the date of the show and the location. There's so many shows that historically always fall on the same weekend each summer.

The show sponsor then also can pay the corps, which will help draw groups. DCA pays each corps a tiny little share at the end of the season.

DCA has no risk in a show financially, their only risk is reputation. They don't want a show sponsor to show DCA in the wrong way, which is why there's a minimum as to how many corps have to be at a show.

all of the answers given so far are pretty much ok... but of course do not touch the complexity of the issue... if you wish to know more, I would simply contact Dick Eschenmann DCA business manager - the schedule and sponsors is 100% his job... businessmanager@dcacorps.org should work - or at least it was working a bit back...

DCA still allows and expects some control to be in the hands of the sponsors whereas DCI is now in a "take it or leave it" situation for sponsors... The big thing is that DCI's payments to the corps are set by the Board of Directors based on position in the previous season and non-negotiable while DCA will "recommend" and advise but the final payment to the corps is negotiable between the sponsor and the corps. Both organizations have a set fee for the judges/sheets and day of show management... Consequently, travel cost for the corps a dca sponsor wants and show location which - naturally - determines travel costs, become the critical issues when running a dca show.

The DCA central region has a set pay scale for the corps in the region. It is based off the old formula used by DCM.

well DCA has a risk if it's a show they run, such as Scranton
