On Saturday, January 12th, the Selden Cadets Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps was one of three acts declared “winners” at the “Pizzazz” Talent Show held at the historic Patchogue Theater in Patchogue, New York. The corps beat out over twenty other acts in the “America’s Got Talent” style talent competition. The highly talented and competitive field included singers from many genres including Pop, Contemporary, Hip Hop and classic; several other bands, comedians and dance troops. Several of the acts had appeared on “America’s Got Talent”, “The X Factor” and “The Voice”; and several acts were promoting their Youtube channels.

The corps appeared as the first act after intermission. They opened with their lively rendition of drum corps favorite “Brazil”. The 4 percussionists drove home the rhythms while the brass got into the groove. At the end of “Brazil”, the percussion section immediately laid down a different, more subtle groove as the corps segued into another drum corps favorite… “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from the Broadway musical “Evita”. After a momentary breather, the corps closed their high energy 5 minute set with “With a Song In My Heart”, ending to a rousing ovation from the non-drum corps audience.

At the end of the night when the results were announced, the members of the corps were elated, not just to have been declared winners but to have gained new fans and exposed more people to drum corps.

The corps will be appearing in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Pennsylvania during the coming months. Come out and see them. Or, if you’re on Long Island on a Thursday night, check them out at their rehearsals, held at the Clubhouse of Suffolk, 939 Johnson Avenue, Ronkonkoma, New York. Rehearsal times are 7 to 9 pm.
