a friend of mine swears by the use of a P.E.T.E. device to improve endurance and range on his trumpet. Has anyone used this device? Is it worth it? Are there any dangers?

You might try this short book that incorporates a similar approach (without the need of a P.E.T.E. device):

http://www.amazon.com/IMPROVE-CHOPS-WITHOUT-PLAYING-ebook/dp/B00AK12M5K/ref=sr_1_9?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1367518212&sr=1-9&keywords=trumpet

I've tried the method found in the book and found that it had a quick and noticeably positive impact on range and endurance. It's easy to do during the commute each day and takes only a couple of minutes.

Does it have to do with the old pencil trick?

No pencil, pen, or typewriter involved with the method prescribed in the Boe booklet.
