PROGRAM: "Symbolia: Action Language" -- HITES: Gavorkna Fanfare by Jack Stamp -- SQUEANS: Jug Blues and Fat Pickin by Don Freund -- SOLRADS: Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre -- BRIFFITS: Dionysiaques by Florent Schmitt In 1964, American cartoonist Mort Walker started coining terms to describe the various symbols used to accentuate physical action in comic strips and animated films. Much to his surprise, a few of these terms caught on, and by 1980 he had written "The Lexicon of Comicana" to describe this "symbolia" of comics and cartoons. You are probably already familiar with many of these shapes/drawings and never realized they had names! Join Xothyme as we explore the wild and wacky world of the funny pages. 1. Hites: Horizontal straight lines trailing after something moving with great speed. 2. Squeans: Little starbursts or circles that signify intoxication, dizziness, or sickness. 3. Solrads: Radiating lines drawn from something luminous like a light bulb or the sun. 4. Briffits: Clouds of dust that hang in the spot of a swiftly departing character or object.
