PROGRAM: "Les Mariés de la Tour Eiffel"

-- Overture: Le 14 Juillet (from "Le Mariés de la Tour Eiffel") by Georges Auric

-- Suite Provençale, Movement I: Animé by Darius Milhaud

-- La Baigneuse de Trouville (from "Le Mariés de la Tour Eiffel") by Francis Poulenc

-- Valse des Depeches (from "Le Mariés de la Tour Eiffel") by Germaine Tailleferre

-- Marche funèbre (from "Le Mariés de la Tour Eiffel") by Arthur Honegger

-- Symphony for solo piano, Movement IV by Charles-Valentin Alkan

"Les Six" was formed in 1917 under the leadership of Jean Cocteau and Erik Satie. The six composers, some of the brightest young talents in French classical music, spent some time working and living together, but the partnership did not last long. By 1920 Louis Durey had left the group to live in seclusion and the others began to drift apart--but not before Cocteau inspired a ballet with music from the remaining five members: Georges Auric, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, and Germaine Tailleferre.

"Le Mariés de la Tour Eiffel" was that ballet, a bizarre surrealist spectacle with dancers in masks, a running commentary being shouted through a cardboard megaphone, and music from five different composers. The plot involves a wedding party on one of the platforms of the Eiffel Tower. Amongst the usual hustle and bustle of the day (July 14th) a cornucopia of bizarre events take place involving a hunchback photographer, a wedding guest "accidentally" getting eaten by a lion, and then the entire wedding party being massacred by a space alien playing a fairground midway game resembling a coconut shy and knocking them off the tower!

Blue Devils 2014? :tongue:/>

In all seriousness thanks for bringing unique and unheard music to the DCPI field!

Listening to samples I assume there is a good bit of body movement by the corps?

The Overture (opener), waltz, and funeral march will have a lot of body movement. The rest of the time they'll be moving to fast to do anything but march and play.
