PROGRAM: "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves"

-- Piano Concerto after Arabian Themes by Fikret Amirov and Elmira Nazirova

-- Fantasy on Two Folk Songs by Nikolai Budashkin

-- Dance of the Persian Slaves (from "Khovanshchina") by Modest Mussorgsky

-- Dance of the Gaditanae Maidens (from "Spartacus") by Aram Khachaturian

-- Victory of Spartacus (from "Spartacus") by Aram Khachaturian

The Arabic folk-tale about a poor woodcutter who stumbles across the treasure trove of a band of forty thieves (Ali Baba was not the leader of the thieves, as is sometimes represented) is one of the most well-known stories from "One Thousand and One Nights." Ali Baba overhears the thieves magical password (commonly translated as "Open Sesame!") and helps himself to some of the loot. After his greedy brother Cassim gets killed going for more, the band of thieves target Ali Baba to protect their secret. The true hero of the story is one of Cassim's servant girls, Morgiana, who constantly outwits and foils the thieves' diabolical plans while Ali Baba remains oblivious to his peril.

Interestingly, Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sinbad the Sailor are all independent Middle Eastern folk-tales that were not part of the original Arabic version of "1,001 Nights"; they were added to the collection by European translators in the 19th Century.

I look forward to it. It's been so long since The Knights have topped Polaris at Finals that I've almost forgotten what it feels like.

hey I fired the assistant that ran last season===he didn't dare make any changes all season and if not for our great kids we wouldn't have even made finals!

Guess I have to stop focusing on Nemesis

Polaris has finished ahead of The Knights in seven of Polaris's ten seasons of existence. Of course, as you said, we're usually neck and neck... and TWO of The Knights' three victories included the DCPI World Class Championship.

I'm sure it will be another brawl in the standings, per usual.
