While this system may have its flaws, I can not think of abetter one, taking into consideration the realities of DCA competion vs. say a DCI tour where everyone is at 4 - 6 contest a week and there are three regionals where everyone is competing head to head. Any suggestions?

Quick question ... is "the highest August score" scenario one that was voted in by the DCA member corps? ... I believe it had been "the average" of some set of scores prior to that ... thanks in advance for any insight ...

How do you figure?

No sour grapes here, but the one time MBI went on after the Bucs, due to a hurricane no less, was the only time that they won.

Going on later changes the mindset of the performing group and the perception of the ensemble.

It may be the difference between playing with the sun in your face. It does matter and should be decided on a weekend that everyone has a chance to compete. Another system would be better.

Spot on! And at no time was this more true than DCA prelims/finals in 2011. Add to this the frenzy of the crowd, anticipating that someone...ANYONE...would end the Bucs string at finals. It all made for a perfect storm....no pun intended.

hasn't seemed to hurt MBI or Govies in the past.

just sayin

Hard to say it does, hard to say it doesnt.

Non east coast corps tend to play catch up on prelims rather than being able to go out in their proper order to get the read before/after the correct corps around them. If the judges do a perfect job, it wouldnt matter but managing numbers isnt easy and could potentially mess with a corps finals time slot.

Just an idea: Since practically every corps is out 2 weeks before finals, maybe they could use those scores and put corps into groups of 3 for random draw order. Problem is... what to do with the corps that dont get a score that weekend.

Sure, in a perfect world, the best performance at prelims would come out on top, regardless of the performance order. But prelims/finals, more that any other show usually becomes more about ranking and numbers management. Case in point....does anyone really believe that the 6th place corps in DCA finals truly is deserving of a 90+ score?

Looking at the most recent scores, it seems to be most of the top open class corps are averaging a score increase of around 2.5 pts per week. If that average stays the same, MBI would have had to have scored a 96.45+ last weekend to keep that final time slot. That seems rather unrealistic. That 2.5 could be the difference between going on 1st or 5th at prelims depending on the year. As much as I wish I did, I don't know of a good solution that is both fair and flexible enough to cover all the 'what if' scenarios such as rain-outs.
