To me, one of the best experiences I had in marching band was working my tail off to be as good as I could be and then having that rewarded by having success in competition. I'm sure that there are plenty of benefits that come from just participating, but its not the same as put your whole heart into something and being rewarded for it in competition. I enjoy all the world class corps. My comments were based on my erroneous assumption that BDC members were high school age kids. They were pretty amazing, now that I realize how young they were. I apologize if I offended anyone. Success at competition can be measured very differently. Some NBA team's goal is to make the playoffs instead of winning the Championship. They're realistic...and maybe a Championship is something they can set as a goal in the future. But it doesn't mean they've put less of "their whole heart into" it. Furthermore...you could take anything you have ever done in your life, compare it to somebody else, and come out looking extremely subpar to poor.
