My thoughts for tonight:

Crown - Way, way better performance than in Denver..... I was almost sure they would open up the spread on BD quite a bit. I like almost every aspect of this show and I usually hate amplified vocals..... but this is probably the best use of them in drum corps history.

Blue Devils - I like the show, but I think it is a step up in difficulty for them, and it is showing. It is scary how dirty they seemed tonight, yet still scored well. If they bring this anywhere close to there normal cleanliness level, might be tough to beat them. The judges must be giving them a ton of credit for demand.

Cadets - After Crown performed, I thought they had this show in the bag, but after Cadets I wasn't so sure. This was an amazing performance tonight and I absolutely loved all the changes they made to the show (especially eliminating that strange "cutesy" section in the scherzo). I think they are going to need to add some demand somewhere to be able to catch Crown though. It is awesome that we have three championship level shows this year.

SCV - Wow.... brass sounds better than they have since 2004 in my opinion. They are finally doing Shaw's arrangements justice, and beginning to sound similar to Phantom 2003-2008 (which is a great thing). Extremely entertaining musically and visually. I see them solidly in 4th the rest of the season.

Phantom Regiment - The show is a bit stale for me, but does have some gorgeous parts. It feels like Phantom "lite" though. They are very clean, so more demand may be in order to max out their effect.

Bluecoats - I think it was a rough performance tonight, but I know they recently made many changes. The show is interesting and they really seem to be going for that BD-like multiple points of focus at many times.

Cavaliers - The music book I think is OK, but it is definitely not being performed up to standard. I wish they could make a bigger deal about the change from the hood to the proper uniform... would be a really cool effect if it was a surprise.

Right or wrong, I like the style of your review :worthy:

Can we go back to Cavies.. and how embarrassingly dirty their drill was??? It was quite bad. This is not the Cavies we know and love. This is barely finals capable Cavies. Come on guys pull it together...

I really don't see the progress everyone had been talking about with this corps. And I'm not a fan of the design. It is better than last year.. but still.. they can't perform it.

My Favs Tonight:

1. SCV

2. Crown/Cadets

3. Blooo

4. Phantom

5. BD

6. Cavaliers

My Standings:

1. Crown

2. Cadets - by a full point over BD (think the judges just got this one wrong, should be corrected soon)

3. BD

4. SCV - roughly 1 point under BD

5. Phantom

6. Bluecoats

7. Cavaliers - and I'm sorry, and this is no disrespect to the Cavaliers (who have made terrific improvements) but if they are only .2 behind the Bluecoats then something with the judging is horribly wrong. They should be 2 points behind BLOO!

Room for most improvement: Cadets, Crown, BD, SCV (and this will likely be your top 4 this year)

Overall Crowd Favorites: SCV and Crown

Who could suffer the most when guard gets judged? Crown and Cavaliers

Most likely to win the title? Crown, with Cadets a dark horse. SCV is a potential dark horse. They are legit.

Personal Observations:

- love the narration in Crown's show. Brilliant.

- love everything about the Cadets show. Solid top to bottom, so many moods, great music and performance, and stunning color effects.

- Love Phantom's ballad

- like BD's opener. Not wild about the rest of the show.

- SCV's Les Mis is amazing and filled with power and chills. Bravo!!

- The Cavaliers are fast improving a decent show with very little upward growth potential from this point. Musicians, especially brass, just seem weak to me.

- Bluecoats are vastly underscored and should be within .5 of Phantom.

- I like Barry Manilow. I really do. One of my favs from the 70s and early 80s, but One Voice is odd. Nice arranging and all to try and sell it but I'm still not sure what to make of it. Copacabana, New York City Rhythm, Boogie Woogie bugle Boy (that he arranged for Bette Midler), Jump Shout Boogie, and some others would have been better. Nonetheless, the singers were excellent and I give the performers credit for singing and playing so well; but that was not drum corps to me.

Do NOT like the whole TOC thing.

Good contest all the way around. Interesting to note that Cavaliers have closed 4 points on Bluecoats in three weeks.

That did seem pretty interesting. I would have thought the spread would have been a bit bigger tonight, but Coats did seem to have an off run. I suspect things will be a bit wider on Saturday, especially with Madison, Boston, and Spirit getting thrown into the mix

Since we're gushing over Crown, I'll join. I've never been head over heels for Crown. However, I love this show/corps so much. I've never been a fan of vocals in drum corps but in this show it just works for me. The narration in the ballad is so incredibly powerful. I'd like to write the ballad narrator a "thank you" note because he freaking nails it and I'm completely moved.

Here are my fears/concerns.

A) Indoor venues have a way of killing emotion from drum corps, IMO. I hope this show translates well indoors or I'll be living off of mid season recordings of this show until I die.

B) I don't like Crown's history with endings. They've had some classic drum corps endings that have been changed to cheesy "try too hard" moments (my opinion). I would have no objections to the current ending being 'it', but I doubt this will happen. Please please please don't kill the show with a lame ending.

I was here too and agree with everything you said. Great night overall, minus the terribly awkward audience interviews.. Crown blew. Me. Away. Took my friend for his first drum corps event I think this show made him a fan for life.

Crown has been scoring 1st in Guard for the past week or two...

Guard is definitely not a weakness for them this year

True...they have added more body this year, but for me it's just too many sequential rifle tosses. Seemed like there were fewer of them tonight, so possibly they have already started correcting that. Strong equipment guard...body not so much, but not sure they'll be able to hold off BD and/or Cadets (and possibly SCV and Phantom). Still, if they can stay close in guard and drums, they have a shot at the ring.

Go back and watch the video from the Akron season opener. It's already come a long way. It's obviously not going to hit the Top 5, but IMO it's a good "rebuilding" program that sticks pretty close to the tried-and-true Cavies formula. You really think what you saw tonight isn't going to be in finals? My guess is that they move up a spot or two from last year.
