So much for being a gracious guest.

The irony in all this is The Cadets would likely have folded and not be with us today if it was not for an 11th hour influx of marchers from the Univ. of Mississippi Marching Band in the early 1980's. For those not familiar with the history surounding this, The Cadets marching numbers were WAY down, and it looked like they would have to fold the Corps. A young George Hopkins made a last ditch appeal to save the Corps by venturing into the deepest part of the South, Mississippi, to try and persuade members from this University Marching Band to come north to Garfield, N.J. and march his Corps. Fortunately for G.H., many in the Univ. of Mississippi Marching Band decided to take George Hopkins and his Cadets Corps up on his pleas for assistance. This Cadets " southern brigade " from Mississippi that went to his Corps for all intents and purposes saved the Cadets from having to fold their Cadets Drum Corps.

Now I read what George Hopkins is saying about Mississippi this week, and can not help recalling a much much different, and younger G.H. regarding what his views were regading a state whose Flagship University Marching Band saved his Drum Corps from likely DCI extinction. This is terrible PR for the DCI activity with his misguided posts that has rankled so many in that region, and leading to press articles. DCI does not need this type of bad press.

Wasn't aware this was already covered in the "Rumblings..." thread, as I don't have the time or inclination to read every single thread on this board before posting something. If you'd like it taken down that's fine.

That being said, there's no law against pot-stirring or piling on or Hopkins bashing. It's fun! The internet is big- you can always go somewhere else.

It has to do with the Cadets so it would probably worthwhile to check the Cadets thread before posting, yeah? Don't need to check every thread on DCP, lol.

Nah. Really not too concerned about overlap.

That's a 75 page thread and this 'incident' has appeared in actual news sources so I don't think it's totally unfair.

Just trying to say it's not that hard to check back like 4 pages in the Cadets thread. Or even just bringing up the newest page and seeing that people are talking about it.

This only proves . . .again . . .that Hop needs someone to do his PR for him.

Between this, the job postings that backhandedly comment on the previous holder of the position and some other gaffes, there just needs to be an internal filter in place before something hits Facebook, etc.

No one doubts the sincerity and devotion he brings to the position . . .but, as said "CEO of a 5 million dollar non-profit", it's in your best interest to be as gracious and "PC" as possible, especially in an environment that relies heavily on volunteers and donations to keep going.

I get that he's genuinely sorry . . .but there's no reason this should have to happen again.

Totally agree. It's like he can't get out of his own way sometimes. Does some good stuff - then sticks his foot in his mouth, reflecting poorly on the organization.

Sad it is coming in the middle of a great season for the Cadets. They are performing he heck out of their show and this is just a distracting negative to say the least...

it has ramifications DCI-wide...

there are posts EVERY YEAR on DCP about corps looking for housing b/c they are having trouble finding something for various shows. If there is no more housing, there is no more tour!

There is no need to throw a fit b/c someone lower down the rankings got the stadium and you didn't.
