Ummm. I'm from the South. I marched at Cadets with other people from the South. We toured in the South. Anyone claiming that George Hopkins bashes the South or in any way tries to teach his students to have negative thoughts toward the South is flat out bearing false witness.

I have to wonder if anyone actually bothered to read the Facebook post. He does not bash the South. He does make it clear that touring in the South has challenges that bother him. So freaking what?

Finally common sense in this thread!

When did Facebook posts become worthy of articles in newspapers? Have we fallen that far as a society that a post from someone who performs daily brain dumps expressing every thought he's had in the past two minutes is now news, right up there with the Kardashians and whomever is currently dating George Clooney?

Because the second you post something, a few dozen people wish to get you fired or boycott a product. Etc...

Happened to a friend of mine on this forum many years ago.

When you make it George Hopkins, I'm sure many jumped at the bit to attack him.

Do some of you folks REALLY believe GH has a personal prejudice with "the South"?

He made some very sweeping statements about issues with touring "the South", when his beef was (as garfield pointed out) with DCI or with the housing hosts, and he should have kept it to himself. Right or wrong, people in the South do (someways rightly, someways wrongly) feel there's a lot of anti-Southern prejudice, and Hop's statement plays right into the pattern. I grew up in the South, and it's a diverse place with diverse people and a lot of good and bad things going on, like every other region of the country. But the South does wind up being the butt of a lot of jokes and a lot of trash talk from people who've never lived there, and it gets old and it's easy to get bitter.

Hop's comments don't offend me, but the tone is dismissive enough of "the South" that it will do harm to DCI's image in the region. Whether it's rational or not, sometimes people get their feelings hurt. One of the jobs of the CEO of a non-profit, a director of a drum corps, and a board member of DCI is to be respectful and careful in your public statements, and to be aware of the irrational reactions that people are going to have to your public statements.

Paula Deen is as 'pro South' as it gets, yet you used her as a comparison to someone who was biased against the south.

As someone who proudly grew up in the South, I will say, I think Paula Deen's attitude is decided NOT "pro-South". Her hateful comments and attitude towards a quarter of the population of the South do not represent true Southern pride.

I will give you one thing. You're consistent.
