A few thoughts on DCI then, now, & future...

Recommended Posts

Brother I mean no disrespect to any LGBT. Hell, I live in Hillcrest in San Diego, and if you know anything about Hillcrest...

Fruity, cheesy, nutty...these are all words that describe foods, and also tend to describe an action. Has nothing to do with sexual orientation or bias. There was another poster in this thread that used "gay" as a negative connotation and you didn't even harp on him.

This activity suffers from a whole host of problems - competitive, artistic, and financial. If you think that homophobia is the reason for this activity's problems......wrong.

If you think that thousands of fans are staying away from shows, because "there may be homosexuals in those corps"......wrong.

If you think that this activity is losing marching members (or financial supporters) because there could be homosexuals in those corps.....wrong.

I could list at least a dozen policy decisions by DCI that have had a worse impact on drum corps. And that is without putting a lot of thought into it.

I don't know a thing about Hillcrest or wherever it is that you live--is that supposed to make a difference? Are you saying that because you apparently live around a gay community that somehow automatically gives you a pass to say something like that? And I didn't see the other comment you mentioned--but we're not talking about what he said, we're talking about YOUR comment, so don't divert me.

If you weren't using the term "fruity" to mean effeminate or less-than-masculine, I'll eat my hat.

Good grief!!!! The response from BDStaffAlum is not anywhere close to being homophobic; it was just a comment about the excessive, crazy, and silliness concerning the overdone movements on the field. Want proof?

Webster's Dictionary definition of 'Fruity':

relating to, made with, or resembling fruit; having the flavor or aroma of ripe fruit;

extremely effective, interesting, or enjoyable;

sweet or sentimental especially to excess; crazy, silly.

The bold represents what many consider is being performed on the DCI field, and nowhere does Webster's indicate the word is to be considered effeminate or less-than-masculine. By the way; what flavor is your hat?

My son and I went to our first ever DCI event this year (Allentown) and we were completely blown away with the awesomeness of it. Beforehand, I thought that would get sick of "marching band" music (I know they're not marching bands) but we sat through 2 days with 10-12 groups each day and at the end of it, I wanted more. I have never been more entertained by a show than I was by what I saw and heard at Allentown. I don't have a history with DCI so I can't comment about the changes that have happened but I know what they're putting out now is absolutely terrific. They people around me in the stands seemed to enjoy it quite a bit too.

Awesome comment! Thanks for speaking up. I'm glad to know that DCI is still producing a product that new audience members can appreciate. :thumbup:/>

The only "real" difference is the demand on the performers, the complexity of the end-product and the grueling schedule. Take away our insider perspective and put them in front of a layman and I guarantee, said layman wouldn't even notice, or possibly even know the difference without further explanation...

The schedule isn't nearly as grueling as it once was. There are fewer shows and over a shorter period of time, as I recall. The activity today seems to be depending more heavily on the family of the marching members than it used to. I don't have any data, just basing this on my personal observations.

There's a reason show attendance has been declining year after year since the early 80's peak. Music has been placed on the back burner by the judges who dictate the direction of DCI. It is no longer, the corps muscial interpretations that grab the attention of the people in the stands. Their attention now is focused on the circus like performances, and the one hidden moment buried in the production, that might get noticed or missed all together.

It kindof reminds me of the people who spin plates, constantly running back and forth trying to keep them all going at the same time. I'm glad this vision hasn't taken over our orchestra's who's music survives on its own without the need for theatrics to make it work.

I guess I'm old school since I'd much rather have the visuals support the music and not the other way around.

Its just one more reason. The average music program does nothing for the public outside of itself. No outreach, just sticks themselves in an auditorium for Christmas, spring concert and their assessments. Add a parade maybe. Why should I support as Joe public something they do for themselves and their parents? The product I saw in Allentown was not about entertainment or Joe public...it was about themselves....which is fine....nut stay off my yard and blocking my entrance to get groceries.

That might be one of the dumbest things I've ever read here. The world does not revolve around you and was not created to entertain you.

Is show attendance declining year after year? Do you have any evidence to back that up? It seems like I keep hearing about record crowds at places like Atlanta.

... The world does not revolve around you and was not created to entertain you.

Your statement here is true and I agree with it as it applies to the whole world compared to a single individual; however... The world of 'entertainment' certainly does evolve around the paying audience; the world of 'entertainment' certainly was created to entertain the maximum number of paying audience; and DCI certainly does fit into the world of 'entertainment'. Therefore, since the survival of DCI is directly dependent on the paying public purchasing tickets and souvenirs, DCI corps certainly should cater to the paying public.

Benny Goodman would like a word with you about that one...

So would Ron Burgundy

I think I agree with probably 90% of what you said. And honestly, for every one of you (and me), how many other folks are simply staying away, because they are totally turned off from the activity, and don't care anymore?

a lot
