Glassmen News?

You can still run bingo. Its just not that profitable anymore. I understand that the Bluecoats still have a successful bingo operation. Ohio now has 4 casinos (Toledo, Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati) that would definitely have impact on bingo operations in those areas but Glassmen's bingo had gone belly up before the casinos were even was allowed by state law. They should have addressed the bingo issue 4-5 years ago when it was no longer a viable source of income instead of waiting until massive debt was accumulated.

How other corps do it these days is unknown to me but ultimately I think corps need to establish businesses that exist to support the organization like Crown has done with CrownTickets and their CrownStore.

Correct, Glassmen's bingo was struggling well before the casinos and before the no-smoking laws in Ohio. They didn't adapt their game or modernize enough to keep their existing clientele. You can definitely be successful in Ohio with Bingo, but you have to keep adapting to keep things fresh and competitive.

As much as I would love to see them return, I fear the debt is too high to pay back quickly and then to raise enough to field a corps again. DCI has helped them more than enough! What they really need is to hope for benefactor to step in with a sizable donation. Good luck Glassmen!

Just my two cents.

The organization is done for. No communication between the board and alumni, board and fans, and probably board and board. All they do is ask for money but dont tell you where its going or how much they still owe. The alumni have tried (and still are but are getting frustrated) to raise money and bring the corps back. How about a BOD that will update you and actually do something?

I think that is rather closed minded. It takes time to not fall in to same traps. Hopefully they have a plan and let people in on it soon.

Having seen my first Glassmen show in 1975 and been a long time supporter, I was quite surprised me to hear last year of the debt and their folding. Much unlike other corps, I never got requests for donations, I get 7-10 request from other groups during the year. I assumed they were in good shape since I never heard from them.

Having talked to a number of people over the past year, I concluded that they way the other corps keep themselves up and running is through a strong Alumni support system. ( Cadets, Vanguard, BD , PR and Troop) The Glassmen are trying to get an alumni group together. If the turn out at the Bowling Green show and the Finals event are any indication of how may alumni are interested, they are going to have a long road a head of them.

The economy in Toledo isn't much help either so I doubt there is much corporate sponsorship available. So far as I can the see, the BOD hasn't been very resourceful in there fund raising efforts. This is a whole new era in running a corps, new ideas are very much needed here.

The Glassmen have a 50 year history, I haven't given up hope yet, but clearly some changes are needed.

If you could read the posts in the closed groups you'd understand more. People that want to help just being told donate money and all they said is i want to know whats going on first. They get no response which leads to nothing being donated.

It really sucks that they're inactive. There was a guy at my school who worked his but off to make their 2012 tenor line and he only got to march with them for a year. There were a few other kids at my school who auditioned for the 2013 season that made it but then glassmen released the bad news :(

Blame "Sarah" for their bad karma; payback for all those years of not letting her R.I.P. . :rolleyes:/>

Most people (including me) are going to need an explanation of that.
