remembering names

Recommended Posts

I marched three corps in the early 80s. I hate admitting it to anyone at shows, as you get the typical, " do you know, so and so...he marched that year....". I have trouble remembering the people in my own section let alone the instructors or even my own directors names except for a few select ones. Am I the only one? My worst memory loss is the name of my room mate from the guardsman who went on to march the threepeat for the Garfield Cadets, Geoff ???????

Yes - names (sometimes including my 6 kids') left with my 50s.

I learned a trick from Pepe back in the day - everyone he taught he called "young man" or "young lady" with that thick Brooklyn accent.

I don't do the accent.

It's embarrassing but when you're reunited with someone I pretty much ALWAYS say "hey man" whether I remember the name or not.

Brutal - but I'll be 62 in a couple of weeks and I've learned to live with the new old me.

most of the time.

After reading the OP, I did a quick test...:

It "should" have been easy... I marched my rook-out 31 years ago in an 8-man Contra section. I should easily remember the first names of my section-mates, right...???

BZZZZZZ.... Nope... couldn't do it off the top of my head. I can see their faces as clear as day, but could not nail all the names. I had to revisit a few old photos and shake my brother's memory (Bari in same horn line) as well. At least I have them now, well... for the time being...

Love your screen name. I marched the Ryders also. I now live very close to Lacrosse Wisconsin and if I even think of wearing my Sky Ryders Alumni shirt I have to stay away from the Blue Star souvie stand. They do it to me every time. My hubby knows so and so who marched or taught or was the so and so for Sky in 198.... Do you know him???? Names always ring a bell, but not really. Faces have changed, but I marched with over 360 different people in my days and played with thirty or more different instructors and some came and went during the year. Randy taught our drum line. He was a short guy who had a hand deformity and could play as well as anyone. GREAT GUY, but that is as far as it gets. I wish I could remember but I just don't. I do remember my rookie year marching for Jim Mason, hard to forget that man.

I remember things I wish I could forget. Drum Corps or otherwise

My wife however remembers everything, and reminds me of the things she never wants me to forget too. Married guys will understand this Truth very well.

I am Rain Man with names - well - about 90% of them. It also helped that I wrote down the name of every member for my first year in the corps - and then I remembered who continued. It also helped that a few of the members produced corps yearbooks which I still. I guess my good memory along with having loads of memorabilia helps.

If I see a photo - I can usually remember the name.
