My ideal DCI finals weekend...

Recommended Posts

Wanted to do this for two years and haven't been able to:

Fly in on Friday. Check in, head to a local establishment for food and drink, then head to the warm up area.Spend all evening catching warm ups, get to as many drum lines and some horn lines as possible. When the last corps is done we head to a local pub for some appetizers and a few pints.

Breakfast the next morning, check out some sights, grab some lunch and head to the stadium. In the stadium all day checking out all the shows. After finals, back to the pub for some lively discussions on what just happened. Catch a flight back on Sunday and post my experience here and chill out the rest of the day.

Man I can't wait until I can make this happen.

For me, the ideal DCI weekend has been what I've experienced the past two years. It begins in Lawrence, MA on the Thursday prior to finals week. Boston Crusaders have their last home show and it's a great time. The next day it's off to Allentown for two great nights of drum corps. During the day on Saturday you hit the antique shops and go to Pennsylvania Dutch Country, well you do if you're a history buff like me, but since it rained last year I would have been better off hitting the casinos with some friends. In Allentown you have to go to Yoccos and have food that's good but not good for you. Then you had to Indy, perhaps hitting a few shows along the way.

Now for Indy itself, book a hotel in what I believe is called the Southport section of Indy. The hotels are cheaper and filled with DCI fans, usually parents and grandparents, who according to the nice folks at the Quality Inn are the easiest customers to deal with, and while I know it's not luxury, how much time do you spend in the hotel?

Get to Lucas Oil Stadium in time to see the first corps perform, for the past two years it has been the Blue Saints and leave after the last corps performs in the evening, when scores are read. Repeat on Friday for semi's, and of course finals. I don't believe I experience DCI unless I see everyone compete.

Now to really make it an event, I'd like more variety at the concession stands, but there's not much DCI can do about that...

Since I don't think Indy will be in my plans for next year, my ideal DCI weekend will begin with Big, Loud, and Live in the company of friends and I'll hope Fan Network will not disappoint me!

That's what I do. We go to Indy a day early solely to spend semifinals in the lot and then Saturday we head out to Bubs Burgers in Carmel. After that we enjoy finals and end the night with a drink or five at Baseys across the street.

All of you are thinking FAR too small.

My ideal DCI weekend would consist of completing the following checklist, in no particular order...

- Conducting Phantom's horn warm up

- Designing a new, improved uniform for the Oregon Crusaders

- The Cadets tenor line teaching me how to play (as in, from scratch.)

- Learning how to spin & toss a rifle from the Blue Devil's guard (also starting from scratch. I'd bring my own helmet.)

- Listening to the Battlestar Galactica soundtracks with the Bluecoat's music staff and bouncing arrangement ideas off of them

- Creating a handful of drill sets and watching the Cavaliers try them out

- Having a long chat over beers with Dan Acheson, Micheal Boo, Micheal Cesario, and just to keep things spicy, George Hopkins

- Getting fundraising tips from whomever's in charge of such things at the Blue Devils

- Conducting Vanguard in an on-field warmup

- Shadowing a judge on the field to discover what the heck they're seeing & hearing

- Co-announcing Finals with Brandt Crocker

So that's my ideal DCI weekend.

It's not too much too ask for, right???

Awesome! I would only add to be in the tunnel with Madison for their corps song. Never done that before...

Absolutely! There are two shows, the parking lot and the stadium.
