George Hopkins - soothsayer

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/10/03/Female-Student-Ordered-To-Change-Out-Of-Offensive-NRA-T-shirt A female student at Canyon High School in Anaheim Hills was ordered to change out of her t-shirt because it promoted the NRA.

According to CBS Los Angeles, Haley Bullwinkle said she was sent to the principal's office in September "for violating the school's dress code that forbids offensive, violent, or divisive clothing."

The "offensive" shirt was a gift from Bullwinkle's father, which he gave her after he became a member of the NRA.

The shirt "shows a buck, an American flag, and a hunter's silhouette." Under this is inscribed: "National Rifle Association of America: Protecting America's Traditions Since 1871."

When Bullwinkle's father contacted school principal Kimberly Fricker for an explanation, she told him the shirt violated code because it had an image of a gun on it. In response, Bullwinkle's father has retained an attorney, citing the fact that the drill team twirls fake guns in their performances.

Her father also cited the fact that the school's "mascot is a Comanche," saying: "If you consider... the image of the hunter to be offensive, certainly there are groups that would consider the Comanche Indian Chief [mascot] to be offensive."

Well played, Garfield.

But perhaps you may wish to adapt the thread title to fortune-teller or crystal ball reader. Soothsayer is a chapter in a book by Friedrich Nietzsche from Thus Spoke Zarathustra which has already been claimed by defending champs Carolina Crown if one can still remember August. However, it is also a song by The Mars Volta from The Bedlam in Goliath. Now God knows how much Bedlam in Gotham City and beyond George has caused.

The comments on this thread should be priceless! :shaun:

According to Webster:

sooth·say·er noun \-ˌsā-ər, -ˌser\

: someone who makes predictions about what is going to happen in the future

In effect, you are a soothsayer regarding comments to this thread, eh?

And what does this have to do with George Hopkins? Or, does everything that has anything to do with drum corps automatically have something to do with George Hopkins?

Or, is the title of this thread something conjured up to get people to read it?

We're treading close to DCP's prohibition on current events.

Wait... What?

You don't get the connection?

The title connotes that GH was prescient in his decision to get rid of rifles and, instead, toss curly-things.

(But Yes, everything that has anything to do with drum corps has something to do with GH. He told me so himself. :tounge2: )

Really Mike? You don't get it?

The world has gone mad...

If this was last season, before John Donovan's latest Rules Congress about DCP changes, one would just flip back to old threads and bring up the one from late August/early September concerning the advertisement on the Cadets' web where Hopkins offered for sale the color guard equipment used by the Cadets '13 as not "weapons of war." (Remember now? Much DCP comment followed.) I am presuming that this is what Garfield (ironic pun, no?) is basing any reference of Hopkins upon. N'es pas?

I don't care about the Hoppy angle on this one. But well played with the father in this case, pointing out the absurdity in the school's position from the get go!

Dad may or may not force a change in color guard equipment, but I'll be surprised if he wins on the shirt. Many if not most public schools have a dress code prohibiting the image of a gun among other things, and you can rail all you want about political correctness run amock, but you also might look at it from the school's point of view. They have to be consistent or else parents like this same dad will be all over them for inconsistency and persecution of students and parents administrators don't like.

The school can't prohibit a t-shirt with a handgun pointed at the viewer that says, "Kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out" worn by a deranged-appearing student and allow this dad's daughter to have an NRA t-shirt with an image of a gun. The key to a dress code is removing judgment and interpretation. The dress code has to be clear-cut, so school administrators will be very specific and say anything with an image of a gun violates the school dress code and can't be worn. Period. Anybody looking at the shirt can tell, yes or no, it does or doesn't violate the school dress code.

If you think schools shouldn't have dress codes, fine, but understand what you're opening the door to. Many schools which did away with them at one time have reimposed because there were too many problems related to inappropriate clothing for a learning environment. Each school's dress code is a matter for the school community, including the board, the administrators, teachers, parents, and students to decide.

SCV was twirling bedposts in the 70’s (maybe 80’s) for this very same reason

*someone may need to verify this, maybe they were just into bedposts but that’s what I recall
