JoeSop1
Hey DCP! It's been a while. Great new look! For those die hard drum corps fans familiar with the work of the late, great Bucky Swan. What are your favorite solos or musical highlights from Bucky's career? Linking is always appreciated! rayfallon
You may be looking specifically for Bucky's playing oeuvre, which is surely extensive. And then the obvious spot are the truly incredible, game changing trumpet players he taught from their first note, like Jimmy Brady and Al Chez, both of whom are mentioned in EVERY discussion of the best ever in the activity. But for me his masterpiece of teaching was a mellophone line that I remember as being all (or nearly all) female at the Edison Saints in (I believe) 1977 (I could be off by a year or so). They were exquisite - can't think of another way to describe it. They were in the same category as a section that Diamond Jim and Chez were as individuals. I could once again be wrong in some details here, but I have heard that they migrated en masse (or nearly so) to the Reading Buccaneers in (or around) 1978 and played that unbelievable soli in the Mangione piece. I know I'm being a little vague, but I hope you'll forgive my flagging memory for details. It was 35 - 40 years ago or so. More than a few weeks in any case. Those kids played as well as any mello section I ever heard up until probably 1991 Star of Indiana. And they wouldn't have shied away from Star. Plus they were home grown. That's some teaching.
