Popular Post DrumManTx Posted July 24, 2014 Popular Post Share Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) With all the talk of the moment in the closer, I thought I would discuss why I love all of this show, rather than just that. I thought I would say, that the pitch bend is not what makes this show for me. It's the entire construction. The music is quirky, new agey, but in an accessible and extremely fun way, especailly with their amazing duo of Rarick and Thrower, they're amazing, they consistently put out some of my favorite charts every single year. 2009's Haitan Fight Song, 2010s "160bpm" from Angels and Demons, 2011s "Creep", 2012s "Love Song" and "Filet", 2013s "City Life". This year it's the whole show for me. The interweaving of electronics in respect to the originals is absolutely flawless and seamless, the whole show. Little effects and highlights throughout with huge nods to the original pieces prove to me that the Bluecoats, year in and out, know how to utilize electronics the best. The tarp slightly of skew is genius, simple, but messes with your perspective in an awesome way, especially high up. I love the fact that I can't find one single straight up block form in the show that's not skewed at an angle. I LOVE what they do with the props, I think they're staged effectively and they're utilized the perfect amount, not overused or underused which some are this year. I love the orange guard against the Blue in the corps proper, provides a stark contrast that I love, love the silk designs as well. I just think it's simple, to the point, and is just downright fun drum corps. No dorky storyline or message, not characters, no narration, just drum corps. That's not to say I don't enjoy those things in some cases, but it's nice for one not to be. I love variety. Moments besides the pitch bend that I love just about as much, since that has been a huge focus. There's plenty more that I enjoy the hell out of in this show: 1) The opening ferocious stabs from the brass after the echoey soloist and subdued percussion in the intro of the show. 2) The transition at the end of the second selection, right before the guard breaks out the blue flags, there's a front ensemble interlude I freakin LOVE that's playful and optimistic, in contrast to everything that had come before it. 3) The drum feature, I have 3 words. DEM 1 HANDERS! But seriously, Vanguard, Cadets, Blue Devils, and Cavaliers all have phenomenal percussion ensembles, but the Bluecoats writing, playfullness, and more WGI approach just captures my attention and focus so much more. Many love Vanguard's tuning, but I actually prefer Bluecoats. 4) This is by FAR my favorite ballad of the year, along with Blue Devils "La Strada" and Oregon Crusaders different but tasteful arrangement of Hymn of Acxiom. I personally think it's the most true to the original piece on the field this summer, I think it truly captures the spirit, simplicity, and beauty of the original. HUGE chills every single #### time. 5) The contra feature in the closer is SICK! As far as scoring goes, yes I can see. Blue Devils and The Cadets are clean as hell, and are masters at their craft. Blue Devils in creating a vision into the world of a legendary Film Maker, Cadets making us remember what is to be American. The two corps doing concepts at their absolute best. But so are the Bluecoats. There were LOTS of moments in the shows from 2011 - 2013 that I absolutely loved. 2012 probably being the closest this year for me, I can listen and love that show all day long. But this matches 2010 for me. 2010s my all time favorite drum corps show. That show was bad ### in your face balls to the wall petal to the metal in your face drum corps, with a slightly dystopian eerie creepy vibe to it. This years is the same for me, but with a slightly more tangible theme and the same intensity and bad assery that made me fall in love with it. Can they catch those top 2? If I had to bet money, probably not. But you never know. I get one of two feelings right now from the Bluecoats. 1) They have something big up their sleeves they're going to add soon that will push them over the top. 2) They are pretty successful with the show as is, and will make slight tweaks and adjustments to help them out. I really hope it's the 1st one, if they add anything else that's amazing to this show my head might just explode. They have gone this far without any major rewrites, I think something is needed to push them over, but I'll enjoy the hell outta it either way. Regardless............if this show wins or SCV and Carolina Crown catches up, it's reminding me why I love this activity and it will be a favorite for years to come. There's plenty more that I enjoy the hell out of in this show: Don't mind if I add: 6) During the tubas front and center feature in the opener, and the rest of the brass heads back field, forms three blocks, and then comes forward again. There is a single attacked note when the middle block starts its forward march that is so simple, yet effective. 7) The coordination with the music when the guard tilts the snare line back and forward. 8) The ballad. 'Nuf said. 9) The transition between the ballad and the closer, with the snare line easing into it. 10) The 4 mellophone notes at the end of the intro of the closer. 11) The dramatic pause right before the front ensemble tension building part in the last section of the closer. 12) The goofy look on the guard members' faces during the pitch bend sequence. They have this "Did you hear what they just did? Did you HEAR what they just DID? Wasn't that effin' AWESOME!" look on their faces. 13) The fact that the video crew still can't quite keep up with all the jumping and rifle tossing and percussion moving on the ending tag. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They have this "Did you hear what they just did? Did you HEAR what they just DID? Wasn't that effin' AWESOME!" look on their faces. I love picking through the video and looking at individual members' faces for that. Some of the horn players do a bit of it too, or maybe it's just keep eyes back on the Drum Major that's distorting their face. I've lost track of which show and which horn player it was but I swear there was one who was making this, "Yeah, we're just trolling you now," face. It cracked me up.
